THE FAMILY STONE
This is one of those star-studded titles, like Oh. What. Fun. that has an impressive cast. From Sarah Jessica Parker to Rachel McAdams, it’s a good group. The film is about the perfect son bringing home his perfect (and a little uptight) girlfriend for the Christmas season.

FIVE STAR CHRISTMAS
Another Hallmark that isn’t an ex-returns trope, this one is on the list because it goes for the pretend-everything-is-normal chaos. A group of family members (mainly siblings) pretend to be guests at their dad’s converted B&B in order to get a complimentary review. It’s really quite fun and also features Bethany Joy Lenz in the lead role.

HOLIDAY in HANDCUFFS
If this film isn’t the height of silly, well, I’m not sure what is. It’s a fun film that I’ve seen many times and rewatched this year too. JUST GO WITH IT
Not a Christmas film, but this is one about family and the craziness that comes with it. It’s about a man who needs a family and so he convinces his employee and her kids to play the roles.

Telling the story of different generations in the Cooper family, this one involves a family reunion and bringing strangers to the table, too. The ensemble cast includes Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, and

Lindsay Lohan features in this about a woman who, years later, reunites with her ex in a most unexpected place which is the family home of her boyfriend! The film isn’t anything that “changes” the genre or stereotype, but it is a fun one.

SURVIVING CHRISTMAS
Ben Affleck leads this comedy about a man who hires a family to spend Christmas with him because, well, he has no one and he’s lonely. I think I’ve only seen this one once, but it was one of those crazy movies that makes you laugh, and I’m a big fan of letting a movie that has that goal accomplish its purpose. Christina Applegate co-stars and Jennifer Morrison (from Once Upon a Time) has a credit, too!
Synopsis: A lonely, obnoxious young millionaire pays a family to spend Christmas with him. – Prime Video
Stream, at publication, with Paramount+
