‘THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY’: 1960s COMEDY SURE TO ENTERTAIN
From the 1960s, this film uses a serious historical event as its inspiration while also being infectiously funny. This is The Americanization of Emily.
The Americanization of Emily (1964) Film Review
Being the best kind of go-to and will-do anything enlisted man means that navy man Lt. Commander Charles E. Madison (James Garner) is the man you call if you’re a high-ranking military man. He can get you anything from avocados and Hershey bars to pretty women sitting at the poker table.
However, there is one thing he won’t do and that is serve anywhere or going anywhere danger is.
As he fulfills the duties he is good at, Charlie meets Emily (Julie Andrews), an opinionated and strong Brit who helps her mother keep up the pretense that their family is whole. In reality, Emily has lost all the men in her life, and this brash American is not who she needs, but his cowardice is also what makes him attractive. All seems well until an admiral with an idea may threaten this unexpected whirlwind romance.

‘THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY’: 1960s COMEDY SURE TO ENTERTAIN. A review of the classic 1964 film with #JulieAndrews and #JamesGarner. #Vintage #Classic #ClassicMovie Share on XThis is one of those films that is a strange juxtaposition of things. Its entire premise starts out funny which is about Charlie being a “dog-robber,” a man who lived the “good life” during war while ensuring the high-ranking officials had what they want. The script centers on a very serious thing from history (D-Day) but manages to keep us in stitches which is a rare thing to accomplish.

Also interesting is the casting. Seeing Garner and Julie Andrews pair up is something I guess I didn’t realize ever happened or if so, I forgot. (They went on to co-star in other productions, too.) However, they are fun together and their likely differing real-life personalities allows them to play off each other with some humor and good fun. They present, at the start, a humorous story, but the heart does come in and there are actually some interesting conversations and revelations.
If you don’t enjoy films that mix genres then this may not be for you. However, if you like this cast, I think this title is worth seeing and though not one I’d heard of, it has high user ratings.

Content: there is plenty of innuendo in this one. We see women, often nude (using sheets as covers) in beds or jumping from beds when someone storms into the room. Suggestive comments / language and other implications pepper the script.
