A little-known show that no one seems to talk about, today we are writing up this love story feature on the romance of Patience Evans and Elliot Scott. It’s a thread that doesn’t overpower the story in its PBS show, Patience, but is instead very subtle with moments that, sometimes if you blink, you may miss. It’s also a story that seems to give its characters a little bit of a second chance at the end of series two, but it also makes us wonder if they will go the distance. So, because this is all so wholesome and sweet, the romance has to be given a spotlight… even if we don’t know what will come or if anything ever will come.

The bigger picture story that leads this drama is one that sees Patience, a criminal records employee at the police department, work with a team of detectives to solve cases. The thing about Patience is that she’s a neurodivergent young woman. She is good with puzzles and numbers and never lies. What she isn’t quite as good at is social cues and making friends. Still, a cute criminologist named Elliot Scott catches her eye and she his. Their adorable albeit cutely awkward workplace flirting is memorable as are a few of the moments we get to see between them.

A DATE?

Episode: Season One, Episode 5

Season one mainly shows just a few little things between Patience and Elliot. There are brief scenes between them, and the pair enjoy a bit of banter here and there. But finally Elliot gets brave, and he asks Patience out on a date. She is hesitant and has to think about it, but eventually Patience agrees. 

THE FIRST KISS

Episode: Season One, Episode 6

Like all things she does, the first kiss is maybe a little bit awkward, but Patience initiates and we love seeing her stretched… so long as she is happy. And all appearances say she is. 

THE CLUB

Episode: Season Two, Episode 1

One of the limitations Patience has is noise. She doesn’t do well with loud noises and smaller spaces where say music jams. Still, because Elliot plays in a band and after seeking advice on how to have a relationship, Patience goes to his gig. She finds she’s unable to stay and so she leaves. Realizing this is hard for her and that he finds her wonderful, clever, interesting and genuinely cares, Elliot decides to take her somewhere special on their next date. 

Despite her reservations Elliot takes her to another club, which makes Patience question him after she only just explained her limitations. But she takes a leap, walks into the club and discovers one of the best nights of her life inside a venue that has the guests put earphones on and control the volume as everyone dances under neon lights. The smile Patience wears as she experiences a night out that she is able to enjoy is infectious and wholesome. Seeing Elliot watch her experience this is also so joyful.

THE FRIENDS

Episode: Season Two

Things progress slowly but sweetly between these two, and in one outing, Elliot introduces Patience to his friends, which leads Patience to discover she does like his friends. 

Meeting Patience’s best friend doesn’t go quite as well, but their night out playing trivia ends up happily and seemingly everyone seems to be going well. 

I LIKE SOMEONE ELSE

Episode: Season Two, Episode 8

Everything gets rocky between these two and after a few too many misunderstandings, including Elliot forgetting that teasing doesn’t always land for Patience, she ends things. 

A few longing looks stolen at crime scenes is all they share for a bit. Then Patience examines what soul mates means, and she begins to question this choice. One hostage situation later, and a now safe Patience runs after Elliot, confessing that she knows things are done and that Elliot is seeing someone else (because she clocked him on a date!), but in her own way, she wants him to know she still cares. 

Elliot stops her and tells her he isn’t seeing anyone else. He tells her it’s because he likes someone else.  We, and most importantly Patience realize he means her. Just before she dashes off to close her latest case, Patience leans in to give him a kiss leaving a happy Elliot, returned to boyfriend, watching her go.

No one knows how this love story will end, or if it will end happily, but in this moment, I want them to stay because they are well suited and so wholesomely easy to root for. However, in this moment, I love them and want to wrap all of this happiness for them for safe keeping.
