‘NCIS: NEW YORK’: NEW CITY AND CASES WITH FAMILIAR FACE

In a first, even for the always expanding NCIS verse, this New York iteration brings in an already established character and builds their latest around him.

NCIS: New York (2026) CBS TV Show Review

Covert operations have taught Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL COOL J) many unique and needed skills. He’s run dozens of missions with an LA team he trusts, but the death of his friend, a former Navy man, sends from back to his hometown of New York. Once there, with the permission of Agent-in-Charge Robyn Wells (Jennifer Beals), Sam looks into this death.

While investigating, Sam is paired with Nick Schaeffer (Scott Caan), a smart and tough agent who has a bit of the rogue in him.

In a first, NCIS brings back a character after the show he heavily featured in has long been cancelled. From NCIS: Los Angeles, which had a solid and successful run, Sam Hanna was a well-liked character and someone easy to root on. He was also a character who went through it. Seeing Sam back on the screens of NCIS fans is nice though I will admit, I miss seeing him with the people (from LA) he considered family and vice versa. Still, there wasn’t a way to go back, so seeing him in something new is also fun. And while it’s early days and attachment doesn’t always serve us well, I like the characters.

TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘TRACKER,’ SEASON FOUR: CHANGE AND ADVENTURE COMBINE IN NEW SEASON

The show is pretty good. At least I think it is. I’m much more interested in viewing something from someone who knows what I enjoy rather than objectively what may or may not work. And so far, NCIS: New York does entertain in this season one premiere. Judging it on the show this Hanna character is from, this one works on being much slicker and more of a spy-esuqe drama. The energy is, as usual, high and I am curious to see what comes for not just Sam but the rest of these characters, too.

If you are a fan of the NCIS world, I think you will like or appreciate this season one premiere. It has a pace that fits the genre, and the acting is, as one would expect, quite good, too. Caan plays a familiar version of his character from another CBS drama and the show has the signature team bond (or seems to) which plays into a sense of nostalgia because of the established franchise. None of these things are bad, and only make the show more entertaining.

Content: The content is pretty much the same as with any other crime drama or title in this series. There are intense scenes, chases and yes, there are guns and likely to be other weapons. If it follows normal patterns, there will also be scenes where people use fist fight or there may be other threats. Because the show often deals with deaths, there is usually a body, too. This episode talks about suicide.
