BEST OF 2013 IN FILM AND TV. Chatting about my favorites in entertainment from 2013! What makes your list? Text © Rissi JC

Six months ago, I declared on Twitter that I could already make a “best of” 2013 fiction list. Seriously, that is how wonderful the year had been – credit for that goes to authors and the publishing houses that have recognized all of this talent. Today though, just for fun, I am sharing a few movies and TV shows I saw in 2013 that earned a spot on the proverbial favorites list. Saving that fiction list for last…

BEST OF 2013 IN FILM

In 2013, I really didn’t head to the theater a lot however I saw some fun, good, and thrilling movies both on the big screen and on DVD from this past year. Below is a sampling of what those were.

Austenland – loveloveloved this “spoof” on Austen’s classic stories. Not sure what else can be said about it other than I cannot wait for the February DVD release.

Beautiful Creatures – typing this in seems strange since I didn’t wind up gushing about this film post seeing it. That being said, I
admired its approach to the story and was enchanted with the costumes and settings.

Frozen

Hansel & Gretel, Witch Hunters –  were it not for the violence and language this would be a fun flick for any fairytale lover; it’s sassy and has a fabulous cast even if the plot isn’t extraordinary.

The Host – I’m not sure what this list is saying about me, seriously, I’ve got a few too many “teen” dramas on this list… huh.

Iron Man 3 – this is, hands down, the best of the franchise. So good – and gutsy!

Jack Reacher

Man of Steel

Safe Haven – impressive acting, beautiful scenery and a fabulous book-to-screen adaptation makes this a lovely movie for any of us who are romantics. Plus, no list such as this is complete without a good Nicholas Sparks adaptation on it.

Star Trek Into Darkness – BEST. MOVIE. EVER.

Warm Bodies – cutest movie ever. Loved this one despite having sub-par expectations.

The Wolverine – I liked this one, though I’m not entirely sure it was my favorite of the series.

X-Men, First Class – I know, technically this isn’t a 2013 movie but I couldn’t resist adding it in since I finally saw it this year, it’s definitely the “best” in this series so far.

BEST OF 2013 TELEVISION

If you are reading through these titles and thinking, “wait… those are from 2012 (or earlier),” you’d be correct. Since I didn’t see any of these until they released on DVD or just recently started watching some “oldies,” they count as “newbies” of 2013. It works.

…and that’s a wrap for 2013. Another year, another fabulous line-up.

Keep an eye out for my favorites in fiction… saved the best for last. :)Now, it’s your turn; what are some of the movies/television shows that made your favorites list. I’d love to know!

I didn't get to see Austenland in theaters so I am *very* excited about the DVD release in February! :)

Great list, by the way. I still need to check out a few of these. (You've probably seen my list so I won't rehash it here. :)

    • Rissi December 30, 2013 at 5:03 PM

You and I both, Kristin – we made a day trip to see Austenland and it was worth it though I'm SO going to buy the DVD in February. :)

I did indeed see your list and loved it (reading everyone's end-of-year lists are enjoyable to browse). You've got some great taste, girl. :)

SO with you on Austenland. I can't wait to buy it and I never ever say that.

    • Rissi December 30, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Me, too! I cannot wait to nab a copy in February – perfect for Valentine's Day! :)

  • Maria December 30, 2013 at 2:43 PM

My favorite tv shows…which I discovered this year were White Collar and Psych. LOVE those!!!

    • Rissi December 30, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Ooo! Maria, I love White Collar (it's so clever) and I do get a kick out of Psych though I've not seen the entire first season. Yet. ;)

Yay I love that you included Warm Bodies. It was one of my faves. I'm not a big Star Trek person, but I loved that movie as well…because, well, Benedict Cumberbatch. I tend to love anything he does. :) Speaking of, the TV show that made my favorites list this year was Sherlock…although it didn't come out this year, I just happened to finally watch it this year. Haha!

    • Rissi December 31, 2013 at 1:21 AM

Honestly, I liked the first Star Trek remake, Melissa but this sequel? It was brilliant. I often forget that before he was Sherlock, Benedict was in some minor supporting roles (like Amazing Grace) because he's just cool in these better known roles like Sherlock or as Khan. ;) Glad you discovered BBC's Sherlock – it's good, right?!

Warm Bodies, I'm not sure there's much else to be said about it other than, AWESOME. ;)

:D I see a lot of my favorites up there! Hehehe. I really wanted to see Austenland, but I somehow missed it in theaters. I guess I'll have to redbox it. Great post!

    • Rissi December 31, 2013 at 1:23 AM

      *High Five*

Cannot wait to get your opinion of Austenland, Rosie. My biggest advice on that one is not to take it too seriously and most Austen fans will find it fun if watched from that perspective. I sure did. :)

      Thanks for reading.

  • Sereina December 31, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Monsters University is one of my favorites from this year. It's not often I dislike a Pixar film! Doctor Who and Monk are my TV favs. Just a few more episodes until I'm at Matt Smith in DW. Can't wait!

    • Rissi December 31, 2013 at 1:26 AM

I've not seen 'Monsters,' Sereina though have heard great things about it. Just watched Frozen from Disney as well as non-Disney animated film, Despicable Me 2; both were adorable.

Hooray for the Doctor Who love (hope you enjoy that final episode); I've not seen Monk though my uncle likes the show whereas my cousin says he drives her nuts. ;)

  • Alyssa Faith December 31, 2013 at 1:57 AM

My favorite movie of the year is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!!! I can't gush about it enough, but the ending was so cruel. My TV fave is absolutely, positively, Duck Dynasty!! But that's a given for me, as I come from the redneck persuasion. :)

    • Rissi December 31, 2013 at 6:56 PM

You are not alone in thinking The Hobbit ending was cruel, Alyssa. One of my friends said it's going to be a l-o-n-g year. ;) Glad you enjoyed the film despite that ending!

I've heard all sorts of things about Duck Dynasty and got a kick out of the family appearing at the Country Music Awards earlier this year though I've not watched the show; I do think it was wrong all that went down with A&E, and think it's nice that they reinstated the show and Phil.

Glad you popped in, Alyssa! :)

  • Ella December 31, 2013 at 5:46 AM

Austenland was in and out where I live….so I am excited for its DVD release.

I saw many good movies in 2013. I just have to figure out what they are. LOL

    • Rissi December 31, 2013 at 6:58 PM

…cannot wait to get your thoughts on Austenland, Ella. Give me a shout-out when you do. :)

I probably saw more than these few in 2013 that were favorites, however this was what I came up with… so it'll do. ;)

  • Bluerose January 2, 2014 at 9:47 PM

X-Men, First Class was my favorite of the series so far, too! Now I want to watch it again. Sadly, I haven't got to watch most of those on your list. Hopefully, soon! :)

    • Rissi January 3, 2014 at 6:17 PM

I'm pretty sure X-Men, First Class is still my favorite in the series. It's weird because I don't usually like going "backwards" in series however I did watch it prior to the newer installments so it wasn't so bad. :)

Hope you can see the rest that interest you soon, Tammy. Some of them are jewels. :)

  • Lianne January 7, 2014 at 4:39 PM

Why did I keep thinking Austenland was a miniseries/tv movie? lol. Glad to hear you had a great year watching movies & television! :)

    • Rissi January 7, 2014 at 7:45 PM

Probably because it was such a limited release, Lianne. It was hilarious though if you can watch it without taking it too seriously. ;)

      Thanks for commenting.
