‘A Love Like Ours’: A Tender Best Friends Romance

STORY | Struggling with PTSD, former Marine, Jake Porter has more than one kind of scars. It’s these that hold him back from living fully, and from the joy of relationships. His siblings offer love and the best kind of support they can, but no one can break through the exterior he barricades his life in.

Then Lyndie James returns to Holley Texas. His former best friend, Lyndie’s gentle ways and supportive personality is just what Jake needs. She’s the one person who may break through the protective shell that is Jake’s life.

A Love Like Ours by Becky Wade | Book Review

REVIEW | Becky is one of the best contemporary authors in the marker; her novels continue to delight. This novel is another affirmative mark to why I can say that without reservation she’s easily a favorite author. With each of her novels, she stretches the emotional boundaries and though I do have a favorite title, I love each of them (the balance of humor against the heart tugging moments, which I’ll take about later is always in perfect sync with her characters).

This novel follows youngest Porter brother, Jake and the first love he (let’s be honest) never forgets. Of the three Porter brothers, I do believe Jake’s story is universally the most anticipated. He’s the most repressed of the three, perhaps also most understandably so. In this story, the author prods these wounds, opening them up as genuine portraits of what he might go through. Through it all, the book manages to bring us back to the beauty that is the hero’s scars, a reminder of the plans God has for him.

BOOK REVIEW | ‘Barefoot Summer’ – A Lovely Romance of Renewal

Jake’s greatest “disability” isn’t the physical pain, rather it’s the memories; this story does a good job taking care that he isn’t lost in the shuffle. By comparison Jake is closed off and unlike the Porter men his brothers are, there’s little wit to his personality. But I’m telling you, you’ll still fall for him. Likewise, Lyndie is a delight. Her ray of sunshine persona next to Jake’s is the perfect contrast; I love that she takes a chance on him knowing he’s not in the same place that she is (spiritually) and she never gives up on him. There are a lot of moving parts to this love story, but this is all part of what makes it beautiful.

A Love Like Ours is full of indescribable charms, laughs, tears and good old-fashioned Texas family values. The humor is fantastic [like Jake trying to flirt]. It will tug at your heartstrings, and is certainly a compelling novel not just because of its characters, but because it makes us all the more grateful to those who serve our country. The book also doesn’t wrap everything with a pretty bow. Even still, the story ends in a very hopeful, bright place. Sometimes that’s the most rewarding story an author can gift her readers. A Love Like Ours is this and so much more. ♥

[Worth mentioning is Amber, the single mother from Undeniably Yours, who is also a part of this novel. Usually I’m not a fan of the two-love story format, but Amber’s sections are “just enough” that I don’t mind. It never feels as if her story takes away from the main romance or as if anyone is cheated. Instead we watch Amber grow up in some sense and meet a nice, responsible (*ahem* fireman) man.]

Fabulous, Kristin! I'll be looking forward to your lovely review – and agree. Dru's story cannot arrive soon enough. She's going to be quite the Miss Sass. :)

I liked the parts with Amber too and thought they made good teasers! :) Also I'm really pumped for Dru's story!

    • Rissi May 18, 2015 at 6:18 PM

Me. Too. Amber's story was such a cute addition and well, if this book was any indication, Dru is going to be quite the sassy heroine. :)
