Roped is one of those films that just appears on a streaming service with no lead-in. In this case, it’s Netflix and this dramedy, while sweet, doesn’t have an “it” factor.
Roped (2020) Netflix Review
The story is about a small-town girl, Tracy Peterson (Lorynn York), who despite her family’s vegan, conservative lifestyle decides she wants to be someone else – at least sometimes. All of this is fueled by the arrivals of the rodeo in their town, a place that isn’t exactly welcoming of these travelling people. Of course, the real source of her curiosity just happens to be Colton (Josh Swickard), a cute cowboy who works with the rodeo.
While cute in a hometown western kind of way, Roped is a mix of “too many” things which means it cannot seem to decide between being advocate, small-town cozy, or first love romance. There’s an entire animal cruelty plot that creates the conflict of the town. It’s set in a small town, so of course, there’s lots of events that depict this. Then there’s the blush of first love. Mingle all of this together and it “feels” a little too busy to do any one thread well.
FILM REVIEW | ‘Dumplin’ Adaptation: A Good Time Netflix Comedy

In many respects this reminds me of Footloose, only the conflict is of a different kind. I don’t like everything this script preaches and find some of those conflicts seem to be nothing worth having controversy over, but in the end, the story is sweet. Between this and the production quality, this isn’t the best in terms of film-making. That said, it excels at what it sets out to be; a sweet drama. Fun fact, the two leads are also married!
If you like things like Heartland or the romances on Hallmark (like Royal Hearts), you’d enjoy this Roped (2020) Netflix dramedy. It’s cute in a simple kind of way, and will likely leave you with a smile.
