‘A New Year’s Resolution’ is One Spark Filled Romance!

Films that look at post-Christmas festivities are rare. But in reality, I think it too can be a fun rom-com backdrop and so this is why I was quite excited about A New Year’s Resolution. (Well that and its leading man, too.)

A New Year’s Resolution (2019) Hallmark Film Review

Working as a morning show producer, Kelly (Aimee Teegarden) has had a busy year. One that kept her busy working to bring back the Milwaukee show from near cancellation. Now, as she and her team make plans for stories in the New Year, Kelly begins to wonder if it’s finally time to follow her dreams of something new. Before she does, somehow she becomes her network’s new story when she decides, after a year of ignoring her friends, her resolution is to say “yes” to all social invitations.

During her month of saying yes, Kelly keeps running into Tom (Michael Rady), a marketing man who works for a major bank. Just so happens, Tom’s company also sponsors some of the events Kelly attends including a polar plunge. As the two spar, they both realize they quite like each other. Trouble is, Tom doesn’t want to ask out a girl obligated to say “yes,” and Kelly isn’t quite sure she’s ready to commit.

This is one of the films set to close out the 2019 Countdown to Christmas roll out, only to then be pulled. Why this was, I do not know, but now in 2021, finally the network airs it (and on week two of 2021, weird right?). Despite this (and in spite of the annoying end trope), this film is worth the wait. Of course, I’m also willing to admit to some bias.

There’s a fabulous sense of banter in this script and I think these two deliver it pretty dang well too. One of the progressions I do like about a romantic-comedy is when a couple admits they like each or as is the case in this film, they actually coin their time together as “dating,” and see what comes. It’s sweet and fun, and makes their interactions more meaningful.

In the end, while imperfect, A New Year’s Resolution is a charming little film that I would certainly watch again.
