‘TERROR ON THE PRAIRIE’: ONE GRITTY & RAW WESTERN

Another of the original films with production partner Bonfire Legend, Daily Wire debuts another of their films, this time a western. Though if you like John Wayne westerns, Terror on the Prairie is anything but that style.

Terror on the Prairie (2022) Daily Wire Film Review

Living in the desolate wilds of Montana is not anything like Hattie McAllister (Gina Carano) expects when she marries and agrees to move there with her husband. Used to a more civilized way of life in St. Louis, meeting and marrying Jeb (Donald Cerrone) during the war, didn’t mean moving to a place that seems forsaken. After a traumatic experience with a small group of Indians while at home only with her infant daughter, Hattie decides she’s had enough. She wants Jeb to ask for a job with her father, and she wants to go home.

Before anything can change, Hattie’s home is taken over by a small group of former soldiers out to cause harm only they find Mrs. McAllister won’t go quiet.

Perhaps the grittiest of the offerings from Daily Wire, Terror on the Prairie is also not my favorite of theirs. The plot is good and the acting phenomenal. However any western I read about that is similar to this is never my cup of tea. That said, I respect how gritty the film is in many ways as it presents a realistic and sobering reality of what life in the wild west may look like. The film pulls zero punches and gets raw and tough in ways that aren’t pleasant. It also has a clear cut conflict between good and bad, which is something else done well.

There’s stunning scenery where this shoots in Montana which has shine in director Michael Polish’s film and in the absence of a musical score. This makes the film very visceral and startling as this underscores the starkness of this living. Though we don’t see this as the focus, the script also allows glimmers of what it looks like to be good neighbors and have community. Most of all this presents a portrait of a strong woman who has character, gumption and the fortitude to protect what is hers. Gina Carano does a superb job in this among a cast of men that also includes Nick Searcy whom many know from Justified. Another familiar face shows up but her role is very brief and one I wish had been a greater role.

If you like gritty and raw western far, Terror on the Prairie is as well produced as any you’ll find. It’s got all of the top qualities of a solid drama that is here to tell a good story.

Content: this one has a TVMA rating which it does earn. There’s a depiction of a scalping (to open the film) and the stabbing of two men (one across the throat, the other in the neck and repeatedly in the chest). Someone sustains a beating (face, stomach, etc.). There’s always blood spurting everywhere. Bullets in western guns hit their intended victims. A woman is nearly raped twice and another woman has to have stitches put in while blood oozes everywhere. There’s talk of hunting and a cow is shot. There is also some profanity here and there (not to excess) and some immodest period clothing.

  1. Thanks for this excellent review! I’m still trying to decide if I want to see this or not. I would love to see Gina Carano in a western! But maybe not this particular western. Hmm.

    1. Let me know what you think IF you decide to go ahead. Definitely raw and gritty and I would FF a part of two in a re-watch, but it is well produced. :)
