‘9 TO 5’: A COMEDY UNLIKE TODAY’S BRAND OF FUNNY
With an all star cast (though not by today’s standards) and a zany premise, this famous comedy gives a whole new meaning to that “9 to 5” job description.
9 to 5 (1980) Film Review
Widowed and with four children, Violet (Lily Tomlin) may be the best at what she does at the office, but being saddled with the new girl isn’t her idea of real work. Still twelve years on the job and with a promotion so close she can almost sense it, Violet does as her boss asks and shows Judy (Jane Fonda) the ropes. At least she does in a loose sense. Joan isn’t exactly the most confident person and only knowing the job of housewife, she isn’t well equipped for career girl. She’s beaten but hopeful she can make it. Then there is the plucky secretary, Doralee (Dolly Parton), to their boss. A man who quite likes to look at Doralee, he has kept his distance and she’s allowed his looking for the sake of her job. But today she’s had enough.
Violet too finds herself without that promotion and Judy, the most soft hearted, finds herself angry over the firing of one of her co-workers. When the girls learn Violet could have taken her upset a little too far, they scrabble to try to right a few wrongs.

🪢⏲️⛓️‘9 TO 5’: A COMEDY UNLIKE TODAY’S BRAND OF FUNNY⛓️⏲️🪢 JANE FONDA STARS IN THIS 1980 COMEDY. #COMEDY #MOVIES #CLASSICMOVIES #DOLLYPARTON #JANEFONDA #MOVIEREVIEW #MOVIEREVIEWS Share on XThis is another film in a string of flicks that is from the 80s or 90s that I seem to be watching. Quite a lot. Rason being I find them more entertaining and way better in terms of story and heart. 9 to 5 is one that’s quite unusual (at least based on what I’ve seen). The comedy has a little bit of slapstick but mostly it’s solid, old-fashion comedy. The kind that makes you laugh out loud because it IS funny and yet, also absurd.
A famous comedy for its time, I think the dream sequences overstay their welcome more than just a little. Sure it’s comical but also drags the film down. I appreciate that they play into the bigger plot and that writer’s use it again. Supremely entertaining and easy to watch, you’ll find a 1980s classic a good time.

CONTENT: there’s an entire sequence of characters smoking a joint. There’s some minor innuendo and a man ogles a woman and later there’s a reversal scene of her doing it to him. A married couple make out and lie back on a bed. Someone is kept tied up and in chains, leather bands and bondage. There’s a joke made about it.
