THREE REASONS WHY GIBBS’ ‘NCIS’ SEND OFF ARC WAS NEEDED

Writing something that’s late to the conversation is one of my bad traits. This is where we find ourselves today as well. Our topic is all about the good reasons Gibbs’ NCIS sendoff arc was needed. Why is this? Well, this is what we’ll dig into. gibbs ncis send off

If you haven’t watched NCIS, this won’t mean much to you. If you have, you know Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been with the show from the start. Played by Mark Harmon, the actor serves as an executive producer and continues in this role in the twentieth season. Gibbs is a former Marine and character of few words. He doesn’t always have all the answers but is the one everyone looks to as a leader. He’s fiercely protective of his team (which they repay in loyalty), but he’s also gone through heartbreak he’s never recovered from.

In season eighteen, after rumors he would leave, the writer’s and perhaps Mark Harmon, begin his goodbye ARC. All of which begins when he goes too far, not for the first time, but for the last, with a case that gets him a suspension from NCIS. A suspension he never returns from.

REASONS GIBBS’ NCIS SENDOFF ARC WAS NEEDED

DESERVING: GIBBS is the NCIS BACKBONE

Mark Harmon as Gibbs is the backbone of NCIS. Because the show has been on for twenty years, we may forget all of the things or story threads with him, but there’s a lot of history there. Whether it’s the protective, do-anything attitude he has for his team or the bond between him and Ziva in their earliest days, there’s a lot going on with the characters even if this is primarily a case of the week style. There’s even things he does no one knows about that crosses lines, but is for the good of someone he loves. As a result, this character deserves a good send off. gibbs ncis send off

TURMOIL

Within this, Gibbs is one of those characters in constant turmoil. Not because he’s unwilling step up when need be, but because the death of his wife and child years earlier haunt him. Even in his goodbye arc, there’s turmoil, especially when a case presents Gibbs with a baddie who, acting like his conscience, tries to convince Gibbs they are no different. Both have killed and both are one and the same. The script never really reveals if he comes to believe this or not, but the actions he takes seem to imply he conquers this demon.

PEACE

One of the underlying themes or character turmoil of Leroy Jethro Gibbs is this idea he lacks peace. It’s something always out of his reach during his eighteen-plus years as an NCIS agent. It’s this that in this Gibbs NCIS send off ties into the final moments of Harmon playing this character. The scene is very well done.

It’s between Harmon and Sean Murray who plays the only remaining OG agent working with Gibbs; and one who shares a harrowing experience with his boss. All of this takes place while they’re in Alaska completing a case. Gibbs tells Tim McKee he won’t be returning with him. The scene is well played by both actors and allows Gibbs peace and possibly, the idea that there’s hope for his future.

The entire arc is, for lack of profound words, good. The writers give Gibbs a scene with meaningful connection. It’s memorable and so very well written. If Harmon does ever return for any kind of arc, I hope it’s not with the goal of character death. Even though a death now wouldn’t be “tragic,” given there’s peace, it’d still be sad. So, if this is end goal over a fun story that brings Gibbs back, my TV plea would be to leave him alone. I’d much rather not see him and know he’s finally ok than see him return only to die in some type of “deep” story arc. But then that’s just me.

What do you think? Is Gibbs sign off arc was good? Would you have liked something different? How would you write off the character differently? How would you rate this arc? If he returns, how would you like it to play out? Comment all of your comments. Let’s meet in the comments section.
