THINGS THAT MAKE ME WANT TO READ A BOOK

When it comes to picking books, I’m pretty superficial. This I admit. The “draw” is always cover art which means that the big things that make me want to read a book is that cover design.

Part of adulting means I try and be responsible and of course, look further into the novel. Does it sound good? Is it the type of novel I will be comfortable reading? What do the character’s sound like? Is it by an author I’ve read? A publisher? All of these things and perhaps more are questions I hope I ask and answer. Though once upon a time I’d buy a book with little to know research and that really, is a mistake. Especially considering where I’m at now (with TOO MANY BOOKS). Let’s talk about some of those cover (or story) elements that make me want to read a book.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME WANT TO READ A BOOK

COVER DESIGN

Of course this is number one reason! Why? Because it’s this that first catches ones eye. As far as specific elements, here’s a few things I like on a cover that will catch my eye.

  • All the Bright Colors; Never underestimate a solid color palette.
  • A Cute Couple; illustrated or models, I don’t mind either one and like this look since I enjoy romance novels. The more romanticism, the sweeter the design can be.
  • A Decorative Font; I’m coming to appreciate the font designs more. Most the time they use the entirety of the space plus like these featured (below), they also use elements or texture to help add pizazz.
  • A Pretty Dress; this is a trend that was really big back in the 2012 era of The Selection but we cannot underestimate this one, and a more recent release to use this is Beautiful Wild, or A Thousand Heartbeats, by Kiera Cass, too.
  • Styles Unique to the Industry; when it comes to the industry and the genres within that, some are kind of “same old-same old.” Don’t mistake me, it’s not that I don’t still like the designs or think they’re pretty, but when I see something like Carmen or Lynette’s pop up, they stand out in their Christian fiction industry.

CUTE TITLE

A good book title is also not to be underestimated. It can be cute and fun, or sometimes a little flirty, or one of those plays on words. Some of my favorites include:

FAVORITE AUTHOR

This one is likely a given for most of us. Anytime a favorite author releases a new novel, there’s a high chance, unless they suddenly switch to fantasy or some other loathed trope, I’ll immediately be on board. It’s like the comfort read we all want and love best, no matter how hard or how well we “branch” out.

    1. Thank you, Lydia! It still needs WORK yet and I need to buy/install a new theme since this one isn’t getting updates yet, but I’m glad I finally went ahead with the change. :) Love a good book title and thank you for visiting here!!

    1. YES! We want our bookshelves to be pretty, too!! :) A good title is fun and I think is another thing that helps the book catch my eye. So glad, as always, you stopped by, Lindsey. Thanks.

  1. Favourite author is definitely a top one for me and I do love an eye catching cover too, I’m not so keen on stock images of models or really any kind of people on book covers so that one doesn’t necessarily appeal to me, but I do like illustrations or an eye catching font and some kind of standout colour, though it doesn’t necessarily have to be bright, I often find that black covers can be just eye catching as really colourful ones!

    1. I am liking all of the color lately. But yes, I agree! Any good design no matter than color, does stand out. :) Favorite author, even if this then means I don’t branch out, is always like a comfort read so I’m here for that. :)
