Monday is Victoria Day in Canada. Of course, much like many holidays in America don’t for them, this day doesn’t particularly mean anything to me. However a brief Internet search tells me it does honor England’s long reigning Queen, Victoria. Later in history, it also celebrated the recently departed Queen Elizabeth. Since most of us love a good period drama, we’re collecting 7 movies about Queen Victoria on this day. Though admittedly, some of these are probably TV shows.

👑 7 LOVELY MOVIES TO WATCH THAT CELEBRATE QUEEN VICTORIA. A list of #Historical romance movies about #QueenVictoria. #HistoricalMovies #History #Romance #PeriodDrama #HistoricalDrama Share on XThough I know little about her outside of my cinema pursuits, Victoria has always been a woman who intrigued me. I “met” her years ago in an A&E production and wrote about her so long ago, I would now cringe pulling up the article. Since then I’ve seen other productions about her life and there’s been newer interpretations about her life, too. We’re going to spotlight those today putting them in a handy list for you to use if you want to watch something about her life.
7 MOVIES ABOUT QUEEN VICTORIA
sorted from a-z
THE BLACK PRINCE
This film doesn’t seem to have great reviews though it does feature Amanda Root in the role of Victoria. An actor period drama fans may remember from various roles including her turn as Anne from the 90s Persuasion adaptation. The story follows the “last king of punjab” and his relationship with Queen Victoria. Find to rent or buy on Apple TV+ or Youtube
MRS. BROWN (1997)
One of two times Judi Dench steps into the Queen Victoria role, this time it’s to tell the story of a bond she forms with her trusted servant Mr. John Brown and the upheaval it causes.
VICTORIA (2016 SERIES)
Trying to capitalize on something their post Downton Abbey audience would enjoy, ITV produced this series about the monarch featuring Jenna Louise Coleman. The series only ran for three years so while I think it’s not a strict comparison, the show did enjoy some success. Find on Masterpiece Theatre
VICTORIA AND ABDUL (2017)
In this story, the second time Victoria plays the queen, she forms a friendship with a young clerk. The cast also features well known British actor Michael Gambon.
VICTORIA AND ALBERT (2001)
This is probably the first thing I ever saw about the respected monarch’s life. It’s a stunning miniseries production chronicling her ascent and marriage, but like most films about her life, it does take a bittersweet turn. Fun fact, in addition to many British stars, this stars Jonathan Firth, the less famous Firth brother.
VICTORIA THE GREAT (1937)
Described as a British historical drama, this film tells the story of Victoria’s coronation and the “shared responsibilities” she shares with her husband during their life together. This also has a sequel called Queen of Destiny or Sixty Glorious Years. Unavailable to stream or on U.S. region DVD
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (2010)
With Emily Blunt stepping into the Queenly role here, this is a feature film that is quite lovely. Unlike the 2001 A&E miniseries, this one leaves its focus more on the romance and her early years as Queen which means we get to leave this couple in a happier, more hopeful light which is nice.
