‘TEXT FOR YOU’ BOOK REVIEW: TOUCHING STORY ABOUT MOVING ON

by

STORY: Letting go isn’t easy. Especially when you think you’re responsible for the death of your beloved. This is where Clara puts herself. She wonders if her role in his life played a part in the death of her fiancé. Was his death an accident… or did he take matters into his own hands? text for you

Feeling lost and in need of healing, Clara begins to text the cell phone she buries with Ben, all unaware that someone may be receiving her messages…

REVIEW: This is a novel that was written in German over ten years ago before Penguin released it as a U.S. novel early in 2022. Likely a reason being, the story received adaptation treatment and is now something that perhaps could gain wider interest. What drew me to it was the premise of its story which did sound heartwarming.

Looking into this one shows it’s not well liked. Why I’m not sure, but readers don’t rate it well. I cannot say this is some sort of new favorite, though I do think the novel doesn’t deserve the flack it’s getting. It’s an emotional story about loss and wanting to recapture what you have. This is likely something almost all of us can relate to on some level. I’ve known people keep or use a phone to feel close or stay connection. Again, the plot is something we, sadly, probably relate to, even if it’s more just the loss than the act.

I think the novel is decent. It’s a good story though not one that gives us much in the way of shared page time between main characters. That’s a bummer and something that is a reader pet peeve. The plot also should “feel” kind of slow, but for the most part things move at a nice clip. For me, the book is good. It’s not the best thing I’ve read. But it’s also, somehow, a lovely story about heartache and finding a way to move past this. In the end, even if I don’t agree with all of its conclusions, I do enjoy the majority of Text for You.

Content: there talk of someone having committed suicide and wondering if they did or not. Some profanity, but it’s more minimal than most secular novels. The general tone of the novel is adult just by virtue of loss and its adult relationships.
