Three to Tango (1999) Film Review

Getting their architect business off the ground is important for partners Oscar Novak (Matthew Perry) and Peter Steinberg (Oliver Platt). The next step to doing this means getting the bid to renovate a cultural center. When business tycoon Charles Newman (Dylan McDermott) holds a competition for the job, Oscar’s otherwise boring life gets complicated.

Under the assumption that Oscar is gay, Charles hires him to keep an eye on his girlfriend… a girlfriend the very married Charles isn’t supposed to have. Thing is, once Oscar meets the unique and creative Amy (Neve Campbell), he discovers this rouse just may not work.

While recently scrolling, I ran across this and seeing Matthew Perry led the cast, I decided to play the film. It’s one I think I started a long time ago and never came back to finish watching. I’m glad I finally did. The film is a funny and entertaining 90-some minute flick that’s typical of the era it was produced in. The comedy, the looks, the actors, everything will bring you back to one of the filmmaking eras we don’t see anymore. three to tango

The plot moves fast with plenty of laughs. Whether it’s Oscar’s battle of how to get out of the mess he’s in or the assumptions of strangers (about him), there’s lots of funny. Penned by Aline Brosh McKenna, this is easily something you can watch and enjoy without having to analyze everything. If that name sounds familiar, she also did pen 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada, plus the Netflix comedy Your Place or Mine?. There isn’t a deeper purpose or meaning to the script but it’s instead something you can unplug and enjoy.

Perry and Campbell are cute together, and after his role in the 90s Miracle on 34th Street, it’s quite fun to see McDermott play this character. The film won’t be for everyone because of the moral conflicts, but if you are someone who can enjoy something silly without that bothering you, then Three to Tango is worth a watch. The music is cool, the opening toe-tapping and the cast makes adds charm.

Content: there’s several references to penis “size,” and what everyone likes (never too graphic). A man makes a pass at another one, and there’s a reference to their being “arousal” by the man. We see a couple in bed twice, dressed or covered in sheets. There’s some kissing and other innuendo, but nothing that abuses the normal PG-13 rating that you’ll find in any other film of this era.
