THE TEN POPULAR AUTHORS I STILL HAVE NOT READ (SHOULD I?)

There’s lots of popular authors I haven’t read. There are popular authors I have read and did not care for. Now a days, while there are several mainstream and popular authors I haven’t read, some of them are authors I really don’t think I’ll enjoy. Some I think I will. But today is my “confession” day and your chance to tell me I will love them.

LIST | FIFTEEN FUNNY MOVIES TO END THANKSGIVING WITH

📖THE TEN POPULAR AUTHORS I STILL HAVE NOT READ (SHOULD I?)📖 Some of the #PopularAuthors I still haven't read. Should I? #SarahAdams #SarahJMaas #ColleenHoover #Books #PopularBooks #TopTen #TopTenTuesday #TopTenList #BookList #Books Share on X

Most of these authors write books I have read about on places like Goodreads, so I feel like I’m pretty well informed about them and think my reason for believing I won’t care for them is fair. However, there’s always that off chance I’ll be wrong. As a result, if your favorite author makes this list, I want to know, why do you love them? Make your best case for why any reader should give them a chance! Let’s make it fun… and let’s meet the authors.

POPULAR AUTHORS I HAVEN’T READ

SARAH ADAMS

I don’t know… is Sarah a mainstream and popular author? I’m going to say yes because her books pop up on my Instagram timeline frequently. Goodreads

KATHERINE CENTER

Technically I did start one by Katherine Center, but (at the writing of this), I’m going to say I haven’t read anything by her. Yet. At this point we all know I did finish said novel by Katherine and yes, I did like the book! Goodreads

COLLEEN HOOVER

Based on what I’ve heard of Colleen’s books, and despite everyone and their mom reading her books on Instagram, I just don’t see her novels as being “me reads.” I don’t even think I’ll read the book being adapted with Blake Lively. Just don’t have that great a pull. Goodreads

SOPHIE KINSELLA

This is one author that I own a book by, and am keeping the book. I feel like I would like Sophie’s novels. I just have read give them a read and see what I think. Goodreads

SARAH J. MAAS

For the longest time, I was sure I wanted to read Sarah’s novels. Then the longer time went on, I just didn’t have excitement for her books. I have several books by her and am trying to decide whether or not to try and sell them; the shipping cost would be ridiculous for those! Goodreads

MIMI MATTHEWS

I see this historical fiction author in lots of places, but haven’t read anything by her. I also know that the one time I sent out a copy of her novel for download (in our content roundup), it received the most downloads out of anything I’ve sent out. Goodreads

MARISSA MEYER

I really wanted to give Marissa’s books a chance because I used to chat with someone who once was a book blogger (still miss you, Amber) who recommended them. But I finally put The Lunar books in a box to donate or sell or something. So far, I don’t regret this. There’s far too many books I do want to read and haven’t. Goodreads

BETH O’LEARY

Again, don’t know if Beth fits the parameters but I’m saying yes since her books pop up a lot of places. Goodreads

VERONICA ROTH

I don’t know if Veronica is still popular in terms of her writing, but I know she wrote Divergent which was a hit, but I never read it. I did mostly enjoy the films though. Goodreads

SALLY THORNE

Pretty sure I thought I wanted to read The Hating Game, but that kind of waned after a while. Goodreads

BONUS! STEPHENIE MEYER

Despite the popularity of her books, I never did read a novel by this author. I will admit, I think I did start The Host, but I guess usually I associate Twilight with her name. Goodreads

How many of these authors have you read? How many should I give a chance? Comment all of your best “elevator pitches” below. Let’s talk about all of this!

  1. I’ve read and loved Katherine Center! Things You Save in a Fire is my favorite from her. Love Mimi Matthews too! I read her before her Belles of London series was published with Berkley. A Holiday by Gaslight (novella) and The Matrimonial Advertisement are still my favorites from her. I think they’re both self-published. I’m hit and miss with Colleen Hoover. She’s a lot of angst so I really have to prepare myself before reading her books. Some I just know I won’t like so I don’t bother. Read one Sarah Adams and it was a 3 star read for me. Never read Marissa Meyer, or Sophie Kinsella. Read three prequel novellas from Sarah Maas and haven’t wanted to continue. I don’t think she is for me. Loved Beth O’Leary, but seems like people either love or hate her books. Read two by Sally Thorne. The Hating Game was a hit and her other one was not. Divergent was good, but read it a long time ago. Didn’t continue because got spoiled with the ending of the series. Nope. Loved the Twilight series multiple times, but back in 2007 or 2008. I didn’t love The Host.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing all of your thoughts, Rachel. I enjoyed reading your comment. I really liked ‘Happiness for Beginners’ by Katherine, so now you’ve made me really curious to read more by her! I think I own ‘Things You Save in a Fire’ too so that can be the next one I pick up. :) I see so many good things about Mimi’s books so I think I need to read her and I feel like Colleen just wouldn’t be an author that would suit me as a reading. But I am curious about Beth’s and Sophie’s. :) Thanks so much for visiting!!

    1. I think I did start to read ‘The Host’ but never finished it. Stephanie was such a BIG hit when she wrote ‘Twilight,’ but now it doesn’t seem like she writes anymore or as much. Thanks so much for visiting, Lydia!

    1. All great to know! Thank you, Deanna. I did actually read Happiness for Beginners in-between putting this together and publishing it today, and it was lovely! So maybe I’d also be surprised by other authors on this list. :) Thanks for visiting.

  2. I like the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic, but reading books doesn’t attract my attention. And Mimi Matthew books are lovely, they seem more historically correct than others, I think you would enjoy them

    1. Awesome! I hear so much praise for Mimi’s books, and I’m curious. Also, I too love the ‘Shopaholic’ movie. It’s one of the movies I watch when I don’t want to use my brain. ;) Thanks so much for visiting!

    1. I think the movies end better than the books. Or that’s what I’ve heard based on spoilers. They were supposed to make a final film, and didn’t ever, so that’s probably why the movies end better! :) Thanks so much for visiting today, Bonnie. :)

  3. I’ve read three of these authors. I’m not a romance reader, but I do really like Center’s books. They’re upbeat and funny and have more depth than most contemporary romances. I’ve only read a few of hers, but I enjoyed all of them. I read Meyer back when her books were really popular. They’re…okay. The Lunar Chronicles series is one I quite enjoyed, but those are the only ones I’ve read by Marissa Meyer.

I’ll be interested to see what people say about these authors and what you think of them when you try them.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Someone told me they really liked Marissa’s back when the Lunar books were popular and I did really want to read them… but I think I’ve unhauled them since. I really want to read more by Katherine, too! :)

    1. I haven’t even seen the Twilight movies, Jennifer! About the only thing I do love about the movies is the photos from the wedding scene. ;) Glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t read Sarah’s novels. :)

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one then, Lauren. She’s EVERYWHERE on Instagram with influencers gushing over her books. They just don’t sound like “me” books based on what I’ve read. :)

  4. I’ve read and enjoyed a lot of Sarah J Maas books but I stopped reading them about four or so years ago (basically when I finished the Throne of Glass series) because all her characters and stories started to become very same-y, she was recycling plot lines and characters between her different series and it all started getting too predictable for me, so I’ve not read anymore since and honestly I’ve not really felt any pull to. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles, or at least the first two books I read, but if you are going to read any Marissa Meyer, I highly recommend Heartless, her Queen of Hearts origin story because I thought that was really great. Veronica Roth, honestly, I found the Divergent books kind of meh, they were fine, but I wouldn’t really recommend them now.

    1. Thanks so much for all of your thoughts, Jo! I appreciate reading what you thought of these three authors. I haven’t read anything by Sarah, but I do know what you mean about books “feeling” or reading the same after a person of time. I read another author like that once. And I hear GREAT things about Marissa’s books so while I haven’t gotten rid of her Lunar books (or they’re boxed up to donate, I cannot remember which), I do want to give something by her a chance. I get not recommending a book now that you once liked ok. Or at least, you would only recommend it to certain readers. :)

  5. I’ve loved most of Katherine Center’s novels, my favorites being Happiness for Beginners and The Bodyguard. I usually have mixed reactions with Hoover’s books, so I’d agree she’s not for everyone. Love Kinsella and O’Leary, The Lunar Chronicles is one of my fave series. Each book gets better. I finally read The Hating Game for the first time last year and I loved it so much! I really wished I read it sooner. And I’m a big Twilight fan. Loved The Host, as well. Happy reading!

    1. Happiness for Beginners was a delightful read… so maybe The Bodyguard should be the next one I pick up by Katherine. :) And I’m glad to know that Hoover’s can be hit or miss. I see some people say this on Instagram too and I know the film they were producing (not sure if they restarted production or not) was getting LOTS of controversial opinions. YAY for more O’Leary praise and Sophie’s books just sound dang fun and cute. :)

  6. Great list! I read about half of these authors, and the two that I really love are Marissa Meyer and Sarah J. Maas. Other than those, I have read a couple of Colleen Hoover books, but they read as ‘trauma porn’ to me, and that isn’t quite my jam. But I fully agree that if books aren’t intriguing you, and don’t get you excited to read them, then get rid of them, because it makes space for new books!

    1. For sure! There are so many books and if some just aren’t for us, then we find the ones that are. I feel like Colleen’s books do seem to have lots of trauma in them, based on what I’ve read, and that’s not my thing. It has to be REALLY well done for me to want to watch or read something that has SO much of that in the story. :) Thanks so much for sharing your favorites!!
