‘THE PARENT TRAP’: A BELOVED SIBLING COMEDY FROM THE 90s

Though it’s from the 90s, this remake of the Disney classic The Parent Trap launched a career and gives millennials, still to this day, a nostalgic source of entertainment.

The Parent Trap (1998) Film Review

Going to camp for the summer is something Hallie (Lindsay Lohan) is ready to do. She is excited to experience the summer away from home and make new friends. Then there is Annie (also played by Lohan), a Londoner who is proper and prim, she’s sent to camp to experience an American summer. The two soon come to realize that while their personalities are vastly different, they look exactly alike. This doesn’t soften their dislike for one another and their annoyance leads to playing tricks on each other, which sends them to the isolation cabin.

While being alone together, the two make a curious discovery that they aren’t strangers who look alike. They are actually sisters, and together, they make a plan to spend time with the parent they don’t know. This sends Annie to California and her father Nick (Dennis Quaid) while Hallie travels to London and her mother Elizabeth (Natasha Richardson) all without either parent knowing…

The Parent Trap is a classic in its own right. Perhaps not in the way the 1960s adaptation with Hayley Mills is, but it has lots of charm and boasts a brilliant cast, part of which also introduces Lindsay Lohan as a household name. This is one of those films that I’m sure anyone who falls into a certain generation has seen many times. I know this is a title I did re-watch countless times. In part because I couldn’t watch “just anything” as a kid, and in part because well, I did love the film.

Looking back as an adult, I love the styling (even if outdated) and the cute sequence showcasing Elizabeth James’ work or the funny camping trip Nick takes the girls on. There are so many kind of “iconic” moments in this version. Just as I’m certain this applies to the earlier version (I have seen it, but it’s been a long time). Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid are as equally memorable as Lohan, and even though they play reunited lovers in a family film, they still bring the charm to their characters, all of which leaves no doubt as to their feelings.

Given that this isn’t a film that perhaps has an expiration date or isn’t something viewers are causing to trend, The Parent Trap is still a deserving (at least I think so) film to have in the archives. It’s fun and cute, and has overarching themes of joy. A feeling that doesn’t seem to rule as many stories today.

Stream, at publication, The Parent Trap with Disney+; or digitally rent / purchase on places like Apple TV+ or Prime Video

Content: the PG-rating film really has nothing to mention. There is a kiss or two. Characters play tricks on others; from buckets dumping on someone to scaring someone by putting a lizard on them.
