‘A MERRY SCOTTISH CHRISTMAS’: MORE FAMILIAL BONDS THAN ROMANCE

by

Returning to Hallmark in a heavily promoted role, Lacey Chabert co-leads this story taking place in Scotland. In A Merry Scottish Christmas, Chabert plays Lindsay, a woman operating her own clinic with a heavy workload. For this reasons, she hasn’t even seen her family much in recent years. This includes her mother and brother Brad (Scott Wolf).

Once close, Brad and Lindsay haven’t spoken in a long time and now their mother asks them to Scotland to spend Christmas in the place she grew up.

Same as anything you’ll find on Hallmark this time of year, A Merry Scottish Christmas is cute. It helps that it has a familiar star which is likely what bumped the film up to be cables most-watched film. Perfectly festive with the same kind of script as any peer, the film is cute but not unique.

What makes the film something fans were eager to see is the reunion of Chabert and Wolf. Former 90s co-stars, the pair were in Party of Five where they play siblings as well. The film may also have an easter egg or two from the show that didn’t mean anything to someone who hasn’t seen it. What Hallmark fans will love is the Easter egg of Will Kemp. In 2020 you’ll remember the pair were co-stars in Christmas Waltz. There’s not only a cameo but a nod to this film.

Focusing on healing familial ties rather than romance or too much Christmas, this script isn’t for someone wanting a strict romance story. For anyone who likes these films, you’ll find something cute in A Merry Scottish Christmas.

Content: nothing to note. There’s a kiss or two, discussion about hardship in marriage and some family discord. The film is the usual TV-G rating.
