‘JAG,’ SEASON ONE TV SHOW REVIEW: POPULAR 90S SHOW STILL HAS INFLUENCE
It’s always interesting to watch a show that feels like it’s from a different generation. A long running (eventual) CBS drama, JAG season one (and beyond) is one that still feels relevant.
JAG, Season One (1995) TV Show Review
Paperwork is now the norm for Lt. Harmon Rabb aka Harm (David James Eliot) where once it was the endless open vistas of the sky. As a former naval aviator, he’s grounded after a medical condition forced him to find a new life in the Navy. He finds that with the JAG offices as a lawyer. Alongside his partner Kate (Andrea Parker), the two investigate the reported suicide of a female pilot stationed aboard an aircraft carrier. Harm however doesn’t believe this.
His next assignment pairs him with Lt. Austin (Tracey Needham), a sassy girl from Texas. Much to Harm’s surprise, his partner doesn’t do too well aboard the submarine where they investigate a civilian tech who seems to take control of a torpedo.

‘JAG,’ SEASON ONE TV SHOW REVIEW: POPULAR 90S SHOW STILL HAS INFLUENCE. David James Elliot stars in this NBC (to CBS) military drama. #JAG #GoodShows #TVShows Share on XA long running show that made a debut on NBC before its cancellation made it possible for CBS to pick up the show, JAG is still a solid watch. Sure there’s things that are a bit outdated (most noticeable is the tech), but the stories of good guys never goes out of style. The writing also wrestles in a very poignant and sometimes difficult way with moral things and issues that aren’t always black and white. Some of which may even be a challenge for viewers with a black and white viewpoint. jag season one
I like this show. I think it has modern themes even being over twenty years old. In Harm, we see a noble hero who seems to do the right thing (99% of the time). In Meg, who becomes Harm’s season one partner, we see a sassy and kind heroine who perhaps develops something of a crush on Harm; but never gets the chance to play out. Some of the supporting characters end up becoming returning characters. Then the weekly cases keep us invested and curious. Plus the breadcrumbs of Harmon’s past is another thing that keeps us asking what comes next? If you like military stories like Top Gun (the success of which I suspect played a role here) or you enjoy the still-running NCIS (which is from the same creator), then JAG is likely something you may want to give a chance.
Stream JAG season one on Paramount+ at publication; note, for some reason some episodes are missing from streaming so aside from season one, you likely won’t see every episode

Content: episodes vary in the TV14 content they contain. Some could pass for ‘PG,’ others deal with more adult themes like murder or death. There are tense scenes including people being in a hostage situation or combat scenes (with guns/gunfire) or sequences involving the rescue of a hostage. Some people bring charges of sexual misconduct or assault though none of the cases ever become graphic or descriptive. There is LOTS of flirting and innuendo between a main character and a recurring one who makes it clear sex is an option.
