After the hit that was 2020’s My Spy, Amazon produces a sequel featuring most of the same cast with a silly but fun story. my spy the eternal city

My Spy: The Eternal City (2024) Amazon Film Review

It’s been three years since JJ (Dave Bautista) did any work in his capacity as a CIA field agent. He’s been an office worker since he met Kate. Now he’s happily in a relationship with her and living a stable life. This includes being home and caring for Kate’s 14-year-old daughter Sophie (Chloe Coleman), the teenager he thinks of as his own daughter.

Smart and talented, Sophie is pulling away from JJ as she grows up. She’s weary of the training JJ gives her fostering the aspiration she had to be an agent. Instead, now she’s got a serious crush on a talented musician in her school choir. The one thing making her happy is her choir being chosen as one of five that will travel to Italy to perform.

Cute and snappy, just like My Spy, this sequel is all kinds of good fun. It follows typical patterns not just from the first film, but its genre, and leans into the whole teenage angst elements as well. Seeing so much of the cast return in My Spy the Eternal City is fabulous, and I think I like Bautista even more in the role in this second film. He seems more confident, and I like the bonds between he and Sophie. This brings me to Chloe, who is so good in the role. I like seeing her gain some confidence in her abilities and to see her be able to use them. This comes at the cost of JJ losing skills, but I think, in part, the “why” of this is part of the script. Still, it kind of hurts to see one person shine at the cost of another rather than giving them equal chances to be epic.

The Italian setting is cool and helps this one stand out a bit. I also like seeing the boys and principal appear as new characters, too. Overall, the film is just entertaining, and honestly, that’s all I want when I’m watching something. It makes you laugh, and maybe even shed a tear as we see the full circle ending of the script.

My Spy the Eternal City is full of entertainment and that’s what I was looking for, so it certainly met my expectations.

Content: not much to note. There are a few innuendoes and an adult catches teenagers drinking, presumably, alcohol. Violence such as hand to hand combat and some weapons plays a role. There’s some tense situations (threats of a bomb) and we see someone nearly die and have to receive urgent medical care. The film is appropriately PG-13.
