‘THE COURTSHIP’: A FOREIGN LANGUAGE PERIOD DRAMA ROMANCE

A drama that I watched several months ago, and is currently streaming on Prime, The Courtship is a bit cheesy but also cuter than I would anticipate.

The Courtship (2022) Film Review

Young and inexperienced, Ida (Júlia Mentes) lives a sheltered life in a convent and is at the whim of her father. Though he sees to it that Ida is raised gentile and a lady, her father is anything but a proper gentleman with his penchant for women and house that frequently hosts women who are less than ladies. When Ida is expelled from the convent for helping a young lady, she returns home where her father, quite to her displeasure places an ad to find her a husband, promising her a hefty dowry.

Enter Csaba (Barnabás Rohonyi), a passionate painter who has prestige with his family name, but is in need of capitol. Entering into a marriage will benefit Ida so long as her intended will agree to her terms, which he does. But what of the mysterious reason he is in need of Ida’s dowry?

According to trivia, this filmed in Hungry with original language in Hungarian. The alternate title too is Ida Regénye, which trivia also translates to The Romance of Ida. This title, as The Courtship, gets English dubbing which is ideal for a viewer like me who just cannot get into foreign language period drama. While the language is in English, I still find it distracting because the dubbing sometimes detracts from the intended emotion plus it doesn’t at all match the lip sync, which is distracting, too.

Regardless of this, the film is also surprisingly sweet. I like the romance and the cast, while unknown, play the roles nicely. The supporting characters make little to no impression on me so it’s really just Ida and Csaba who draw me in. There are even some scenes without dialogue that really help this in the most touching ways.

There’s some pretty scenery and I will confess, that though it isn’t given yards to grow, I do love the romance and picturesque “feel” of the production. The opening credits too (which no production seems to take time to include anymore) are darling and the ending too ties everything together, and is dang cute.

You can stream The Courtship on Freevee at publication; you can also find the film on Plex or Tubi TV

Content: there are two scenes of female nudity. A woman disrobes (we see her backside, and her breasts) for a painting; later another woman looks at herself in front of the mirror (upper nudity). Outside of this the film is relatively clean with only a winking innuendo or two. The film, without nudity would be TV-14, though the nudity likely bumps it up to an R.
