‘FAMILY PRACTICE MYSTERIES: COMING HOME’ PUTS EMPHASIS ON FAMILY

A standalone, at least so far, mystery, Family Practice Mysteries: Coming Home features Brendan Penny in a co-lead role.

Family Practice Mysteries: Coming Home (2024) Hallmark TV Film Review

Serving in the military as a trauma surgeon, Rachel Hunt (Amanda Schull) is trying to settle back into life as family practice doctor. Foremost in her mind is her kids adjusting and the loss of her husband to the service. As they try to fit in, Rachel loses a patient who is one of the healthiest patients she has. Suspicious about his death, she tries to recruit her father’s friend, Detective Jack Quinn (Penny) to help her prove this.

The characters and story inside this Hallmark mystery flick, penned by a first time Hallmark scribe, isn’t bad. There’s a decent mystery and we root on the characters. However, and this is just me personally, I’m not a fan of the medical aspect. It’s just not really my thing, though at one time I did like the odd medical show. Because of this, I don’t think I’ll rewatch this or be likely to keep up with this if it becomes a series.

Irrespective of this, Family Practice Mysteries is a good addition to the lineup of original mysteries. The way Amanda and Brendan play the leads is pretty good too, and I think their investigating together works and comes off as pretty solid and interesting. Beyond this I think Schull also plays a convincing doctor (she has that kind of “command” to her personality) and I appreciate that, while there is likely material for “more,” the film also kind of closes itself up with Rachel’s perspective by the story’s end.

If you like the network’s mysteries, I have zero doubt you’ll enjoy this one.

Content: Not a lot to note. There is a dead body we see slumping over a desk. Nothing graphic, and a few medical issues (again nothing graphic or “serious”) crop up.
