‘FIELD DAY’: A PERFECT FALL THEME FOR HALLMARK COMEDY

A perfect autumn “feeling” movie, Field Day follows three mothers trying to put on the perfect school events for their kids, and their schoolmates.

Field Day (2023) Hallmark TV Film Review

Making a big move is hard for Jen Davis (Rachel Boston), especially in the aftermath of a tragedy. Still, looking for a fresh start and stability for her daughter, Isabel (Nevis Unipan), Jen finds herself roped into school committees before they’ve unpacked. The event is the infamous field day. Together with two very different mothers, Jen discovers she may be in over her head. But with successful lawyer Marissa (Carmel Amit) and social media influencer, Kelly (Shannon Chan-Kent), the trio find themselves going up against the PTO and more importantly, that they perhaps are a good team.

The final film in the 2023 Fall Harvest lineup, Field Day is unique and fun, too. It’s one of the better films that fits in the campaign. Fall abounds in the visuals from corn fields and stalks to cozy jackets, and pumpkin recipes. Everything looks fall-like. I also like that the concept is different than most which is typically something like a reunion romance or a cozy inn trip.

This film has some good lessons to impart on its characters like remembering what’s important and moving ahead in the future rather than lingering too long in the past. The romance, while maybe not as prevalent, is also sweet. It has more of a what-could-be rather than definite, which is good for this script; though there is a little too much indecision. Rachel has led many Hallmark movies in the past, and it’s lovely to see Shannon again after last year’s A Big Fat Family Christmas.

All in all, Field Day is a good network fit. I think some of the themes is a pointed message to certain people, which in some ways bothers me. Overall, I think the script has good building blocks of friendship and the difficulty in building that. But there’s also determination about making things work, all with the help of good friends.

Content: The TV-G rating is the same old-school Hallmark rating. There’s a kiss or two.
