10+ AGE GAP ROMANCE MOVIES YOU MAY WANT TO ADD TO YOUR WATCH LIST
Trends and stories come and go. Things like favorite fairy tale legends will get more than one adaptation in a year because research says it’s popular, or a trope will feature prominently in the same season’s Christmas movie block. This is something anyone who watches lots of stories on TV or in film will recognize. Hard to deny is the fact that a 2024 (starting likely before this) trend is the romance with an age gap or age difference. While it’s also not a new trope, it is one that filmmakers are loving, most recently with the woman being the older where it was often a man being the older in a relationship. Since we already took a look at some of the books with this trend, we now have to look at some of the movies with an age gap romance. Because it just seems like it could be interesting.
LIST | THE BEST LOVE STORY MOMENTS OF ELIZA SCARLET AND WILLIAM WELLINGTON
10+ AGE GAP ROMANCE MOVIES YOU MAY WANT TO ADD TO YOUR WATCH LIST. #Romance #RomanceMovies #AgeGap #AgeDifference #Movies #MovieList #RomanceMovie Share on XSome of these are classics, others are those new titles that inspire this list’s creation. But one thing they do all have in common is that most of them are interesting and sometimes even favorite films or TV shows. No matter what the package, this is either a story people love or loathe. If done well, I think it can be really compelling and charming, and I’ve seen it done like this and also really poorly. Let’s see if we can find any beyond the obvious choices, and maybe introduce you to one or two new romances, too.
MOVIES with an AGE GAP ROMANCE
ALICE and HARRY from HOME AGAIN
This puts Reese Witherspoon in the role of “older woman” who finds a fling romance with Harry. The film doesn’t exactly paint a rosy story, but I think it still gives us a solid ending.
The film is PG-13 for sexual content and innuendo; there is also some profanity.
Stream the movie, at publication, with Paramount+
CHRIS and BROOKE from A FAMLY AFFAIR
This one has an older woman and younger man trope, and is, I think, pretty cute. It’s one I’d rewatch even if not one I consider a new favorite. It has a solid cast though and I appreciate that places like Netflix are trying to bring us some of the comedies we loved so well from the 90s and early 2000s.
The film is PG-13 for some sexual content and innuendo, as well as some profanity.
Stream exclusively on Netflix
COL. BRANDON and MARIANNE from SENSE & SENSIBILITY
These two were featured on our book list, but I have to confess, I really love their love story on film too. Particularly the love story between them in the 90s Sense and Sensibility adaptation.
Rent or buy the movie (1995), at publication, on places like Amazon; stream the 2008 miniseries on Pluto TV or find to buy on Amazon
ELIZA DOOLITTLE and HENRY HIGGINS from MY FAIR LADY
I cannot remember if there are specific references to an age difference in this classic film, but there is. The film follows Eliza, a simple flower girl that the educated professor Henry takes on, determined to turn her into a lady. This is certainly a concept that has inspired more than one romance through the years, and is also a story we’ve already spotlighted in a list of films using this trope.

A Jane Austen story, there are countless films or miniseries telling the story of Emma and Mr. Knightly, a man who is several years Emma’s senior. Despite his annoyance with some of Emma’s misjudgments, he also has loved her for a long time.
Stream Emma. (2020) on Freevee; Emma (2009) on BritBox, Peacock, Roku; Emma (1996) on MGM+ or Prime Video
GIN and MAC from ENTRAPMENT
This is a kind of caper style film about a thief who teams up with an older master thief. It’s a kind of cat-and-mouse film about thieves trying to outsmart each other. The film has Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery in the lead roles.
The film has a PG-13 rating with some innuendo and profanity along with some tense scenes.
Purchase or rent on places like Amazon or Apple
HAYES and SOLÈNE from THE IDEA of YOU
This film is one of two that inspired this list. In this scenario, Hayes is a young, up-and-coming pop star who meets, quite unexpectedly, Solène, a woman with a long-standing career and a teen daughter. The story is also based on the novel of the same name, and I think the script lessens the age gap about it’s still over ten years.
Anne Hathaway features in this adult romance that is interesting, but was also controversial. According to tis Prime Video page, the star rating is high, but social media users were split on liking this one.
The film has an R-rating for sexual content (about 2-3 sex scenes), some sexual innuendo and profanity, including (multiple uses of) the F-word.
Stream on Prime Video
MURPHY and EMMA from MURPHY’S ROMANCE
James Garner stars as an older, widowed business owner who forms a strong bond and friendship with newcomer Emma, played by Sally Field. This was a popular 80s film, even earning Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
The film is PG-13 for some sexual innuendo (jokes) and some profanity.
Rent or buy the movie, at publication, on places like Amazon
OWEN and KATHERINE from THE LONELY PLANET
Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth play the would be lovers in this film about two people who while both feeling lonely meet at a writer’s retreat. The script has universally relatable things and for the most part, also deals with the age gap part better than most since it actually develops something (as best it can) rather than having them become physical right off the bat.
The film has an R-rating for sexual content (about 2 sex scenes), some sexual innuendo and profanity, including (multiple uses of) the F-word.
