‘CARRY-ON’: NETFLIX GETS IN ON HIGH STAKES ACTION MOVIE
A film that is often likened to that one action flick people debate as a Christmas movie, Carry On has a home on Netflix and isn’t, far as I see, a super popular title.

Christmas promises good things for most people, but for airport patrons on this Christmas Eve, the lives of everyone passing through are threatened. This happens when a criminal decides bringing in a suitcase with a virus is a good idea. Families, wives, fathers, daughters, sons, all will board this flight. Nora (Sofia Carson), an ambitious woman who works at the airport just found out the most joyous news. Unbeknownst to her she comes to the attention of this baddie.
Then there is Ethan (Taron Egerton), a TSA Agent who is a bit of a slacker and someone without ambition. The mastermind of this plan has big plans for a certain TSA agent, but when it’s Ethan instead of the planned agent, everything shifts. Now this man has plans for Ethan, someone he motivates to help when the person Ethan loves deeply is caught in the crosshairs.

It’s not unique as far as action flicks go, but the way it introduces us to its story is jolly only to then turn sinister. Still, as someone who likes a good action flick now and then, Carry-On rises to being a solid pick. It has a fast-paced plot that keeps things rolling and let’s it easily compete with its genre peers. This is evident by the echoes it boasts of other titles we’ve already seen, but mostly we don’t mind.

The cast is really good and I enjoy seeing some returning Netflix faces as well some as people I have seen in very little. Sofia Carson has had a multi picture deal with Netflix and I like that she can play different roles. Also a kind of breakout “it” star from Apple TV+’s limited series Black Bird. Additional stars who round out the supporting cast, but I’m not entirely sure how much more to say for fear of spoiling things! But suffice to say, the fact that the baddie plays this role so convincingly well is impressive given the roles I best know the person from.
Like I said, I doubt this film will really impress the critics and the people who critique movies without the ability to also enjoy them, probably won’t like this. I quite like that while this film does have an action tag is more about mental action. It entertains and creates some decent suspense and while he’s kind of stereotyped as a slacker, Ethan does rise to the title of being a good guy and hero, of course, too. Because without that, any movie often feels hollow. This one wraps all of this up and that’s good enough.

Content: There is violence in this including the death of various characters. They die from poison and someone shooting them. A sniper rifle threatens someone; another is beaten and is put in a chokehold. A gun backfires on a characters causing them to bleed out. There is a same sex marriage (if that’s an issue). The film is PG-13.
