‘THUNDER FORCE’: JUST A LITTLE TOO SILLY TO ENJOY
Certain subgenres just aren’t my cup of tea. However, once in a while, I’ll sit down, watch one and at the very least, hope there’s some giggles.
Thunder Force (2021) Netflix Film Review
Best friends since the first time she stood up for her against bullies on the playground, Lydia and Emily remain besties through high school. However, Lydia’s wilder, most fun personality clashes against that of Emily’s, who is more about school and feeding her natural smarts. Years pass and the two grow apart. Emily works hard to find a solution to avenge her parents who died at the hands of the Miscreants who terrorize the city.
As their reunion arrives, Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) is encouraged to reach out to Emily and make amends. But when she doesn’t come to the event, Lydia decides to visit her old friend at her company’s impressive headquarters. Once there, Lydia discovers, in a way she never plans, just how close Emily (Octavia Spencer) is to creating her own kind of defense against the Miscreants.

‘THUNDER FORCE’: JUST A LITTLE TOO SILLY TO ENJOY #NETFLIX #THUNDERFORCE #COMEDYMOVIES Share on XSlaphappy movies aren’t my cup of tea. Sure I have a select few that I enjoy, but for the most part, they aren’t my jam. As I do think Melissa McCarthy is a funny entertainer, I decided to watch this from Netflix, fully aware it wasn’t likely to take much, if anything, seriously. So with that said, while I don’t personally love Thunder Force, if you like more of a spoof kind of film, you may enjoy this one.
There’s just a few too many “silly” things for me to really like this one. One being the character of Jason Bateman. It’s just… too much. (The whole chicken bit is really too much as well.) But there are some fun moments and the character of Tracy is an unexpected addition who is as cute as she is fun. To combat the bad, there is some fun aspects to the story. There’s some decent moments and the importance of friendship, plus some of the dialogue sneaks in some good comedy.
If you don’t mind over-the-top silly, then you may very well enjoy Thunder Force. It’s a fine bit of one-time entertainment, but not one I’ll add to my favorite action flicks.
You can find Thunder Force exclusively on Netflix.
Content: There’s some crude humor and suggestive remarks. A woman makes the assumption that two women are going to marry.
