‘THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES,’ SERIES 11: THE NEW ZEALAND DRAMEDY IS BACK!

On its eleventh year, the small town, sort of folksy police drama The Brokenwood Mysteries series 11 returns. This time with six new mysteries and the crime fighting foursome we love, quirks and all. On a dark moonlit night, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) arrives on the scene where a woman’s body falls from the roof of the local bar. A place where earlier, the scene featured a former band playing a gig. Thing is, did she jump or is something more sinister at play?

This puts Mike to work alongside the overly friendly Gina (Cristina Serban Ionda), the pathologist who dislikes Mike’s team but is quite fond of their boss. Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) begins questioning witnesses with Mike while DC Chalmers (Jarod Rawiri) tries to build timelines. But the biggest thing they need an answer to is; who is their victim?

The Brokenwood Mysteries Series 11 (2025) Acorn TV Review

The really cool thing about almost any international police drama you’ll find on places like Acorn TV, is that you don’t have to see the first ten seasons to enjoy this new eleventh. Reason being these international drams don’t dig into the “longing,” get together-break up couples which turns the stories into messy problems. Regardless of this, seasons one through ten are a binge I’d recommend. They are good stories and while the core three are in all the seasons, there are recurring townspeople like the local coffee cart owner.

At this point, the pattern of this show is well established, and while that can become monotonous for some viewers, in the case of The Brokenwood Mysteries series 11, I find it wonderful. It suits the themes and cast and its characters, too. Even with the mess that is murder, which seems to plague this town, I still find the show interesting and love to hang out with the core three as they query suspects and residents as to the “why” behind each case.

All this to say, I think this show is fabulous. It’s one that I would definitely rewatch the entire series for.

Stream, at publication, The Brokenwood Mysteries series 11 on Acorn TV (episode one) and watch for future episodes on Mondays (read below for descriptions and release dates!)

Content: if it bothers you, there is a same sex relationship among the townspeople. Then there is a scene (episode one) where two men hug and one “feels” up the other man (the reveal being its unrequited love). There is a couple in a sexual relationship that’s incestuous (conversation only). We do visit the crime scene (episode one shows a woman lying prone on the ground after a great fall; and episode two shows a body with bad burns marks on their back) and then also see the body again on an autopsy table (covered with a sheet). The Brokenwood Mysteries series 11 is TV14. This content only reflects episodes one and two.
