‘THE HUNTING PARTY’: ANOTHER CRIME DRAMA TRYING TO STAND OUT

With a former NBC TV star heading up the cast, The Hunting Party hopes it can be the next primetime drama to appeal to fans of crime dramas.

The Hunting Party (2025) TV Show Review

Hardened criminals are all dangerous, but then there are some that aren’t even supposed to exist. These prisoners are held in a place that doesn’t even exist which means if ever there is a mishap or someone escapes, the right people need to be on the job. This means that Rebecca Henderson (Melissa Roxburgh), an FBI profiler who isn’t on the FBI’s nice list right now. With secrets of her own, she’s recruited to head up a team of investigators tracking down prisoners who escape The Pit, after an explosion rocks its security.

When it comes to the new TV shows of the season, especially the coveted fall primetime slots, there are usually a handful I’m curious about. Some surpass expectations and others are so-so. But sometime I find that there is something I’m super into. It’s really too early to judge The Hunting Party (my rule is to give a show 2-3 episodes beyond the pilot), but I am curious. The group of characters is solid and each seem capable and appropriately tough in their respective roles. Naturally, I am sure this will also be one to keep us curious.

Melissa also featured in Manifest so her returning to another NBC drama. She’s a good lead in roles like this. At least, the little I’ve seen, she is. You’ll also see Nick Wechsler (most memorably from Revenge on ABC) and Patrick Sabongui, too. The rest of the cast are unfamiliar, but so far, I like them.

While I’m sure this will falter and there be things that annoy or story threads that overstay their welcome, but this pilot was good. I know one thing that will be very annoying is if the conclusion of the “big baddie” (someone with ties to Bex’s past) in this first episode is actually a fake. One thing I am weary of is the consistent storylines in shows that continue to haunt or bother the lead characters. At some point, dragging out a villainous character or the capture and re-capture of the same one grows old fast. Depending on how this plays out, The Hunting Party could be something that intrigues.

Stream, at publication, The Hunting Party on NBC.com or Peacock

Content: apart from the violence, which is on par with almost any TV-14 crime drama, there isn’t really anything to note. The episode deals with some of the usual conversation (like torture of women and all they go through). There is a scene of someone being set on fire (not graphic) and two people receive a gun wound. We see something explode.
