If you’re like me, returning to the small town of Serenity where the best friends of Sweet Magnolias live is always a good time. While some of the stories may repeat, it’s a show easy to watch, and is charming and cute as the cherry on top. This is why today we’re looking at what we know about Sweet Magnolias season four. Because why not?

Helen is the consummate professional and lawyer who hasn’t found happy ever after; Dana Sue is the woman who doesn’t’ really let herself be happy despite her teenage daughter and reuniting with her ex; and then there is Maddie, the single mother whose ex is anything but stable. The show has lots of ups, downs and strange happenings. It also has many tropes we loathe, but I like certain characters and certain romances so much I keep watching. Netflix is about to drop the fourth season of a highly anticipated show and so we’re diving it to look at what we know.

the CAST
The main cast is set to return for season four. This includes the “core” six which is Joanna Garcia-Swisher, Heather Headley and Brooke Elliott; the men in their respective lives are played by Justin Bruening, Dion Johnston & Michael Shenefelt and Brandon Quinn. The series has many recurring stars and the talented young cast who plays the children of these women.
the RECAP
The end of season three left everyone mostly happy or at least in a place of contentment after a tumultuous season. We left our respective couples with good things to come. Ronnie and Dana Sue renewed their wedding vows while daughter Annie and Maddie’s son Ty possibly move forward with a tentative romance of their own. Helen finally makes a decision about the relationship in her life, leaving the possibility of a better future for her. Finally, Maddie and Cal, having gone through it remain in a happy and healthy place.

the STORY
According to Netflix, this fourth season of Sweet Magnolias, set in Serenity South Carolina will continue to follow Dana Sue, Helen and Maddie as they “juggle relationships, family, and careers in their charming Southern hometown.” The synopsis, also taken direct from Netflix, further reads “This season, storms — both emotional and meteorological — disrupt life in Serenity, bringing Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue even closer in unexpected ways. It’ll also feature […] surprising laughter, unexpected heartbreak, and renewed resolve.”

This show is, of course, inspired by novels by Sherryl Woods.
the HOPE
For a modern TV show with very modern values, I have been really impressed with the romance arc that is Maddie and Cal’s romance. That dinner with the ex could have all taken everything sideways and fallen into annoying tropes, but instead it allowed Maddie to show her strength, both for herself and for the relationship she and Cal have been building. In this new season, I have high hopes that their bond will continue. I can handle “normal” relationship challenges, but couples in TV shows also deserve happiness and the audience also earns seeing that reflected. So far, I think their relationship has done this.

I also want to see Helen return to her senses! Prior to season three, she was always the voice of reason and the comforter to everyone. She kind of fell off that pedestal, which is fine, but it wasn’t just a little mistake here and there, it was a full on change that was very off brand for her character so I had issues with this. Still, I think she again knows who she is, and while I don’t mind seeing her wrestle with choices, I also think she underestimated her own strength and wisdom.
According to series star Joanna Garcia Swisher, she says this season has been “magical,” and also says that this is “BY FAR my favorite season…not just for the OMG moments (there are many of them!), but because it was a joy to make.” This gives me more hope that, in the end, this season will again leave everyone happy.
SEASONS
According to Netflix, and some of the photos floating around, this fourth season will lean into holidays! From Halloween to Christmas, the Magnolias are going to celebrate the seasons, and we know they’ll do it in season, right?
