YEAR OF THE COMET: TIM DALY STARS IN 1990s COMEDY

In a film that is part comedy and part kind of “on the run” lighthearted actioner, Year of the Comet is mostly a good time flick.

Year of the Comet (1992) Film Review

The possible eventuality that she may someday impress her father is no longer something that 28-year-old Maggie (Penelope Ann Miller) can wait around for. She’s done trying to help him see her as an asset and valued person in their auction business. About to walk out, he gives her a chance by sending her to Scotland to assess a wine collection at an old castle.

What Maggie doesn’t anticipate is the odd interest a group of men take in the one bottle she finds that is worth an auction, all of whom have different motives for wanting it. And then there is Oliver (Tim Daly), a man who is to accompany Maggie and the million dollar bottle of wine his boss bought from the family auction business.

This film kind of feels like a Knight and Day lite film long before the Tom Cruise film was ever made. It’s not a film action packed in the way that film is, but it does have an adventure lite concept and the usual how-dare-you kind of banter. What’s most fun about Year of the Comet is seeing Tim Daly play another pilot in this given his big TV role in Wings

The production is a little rough and doesn’t always work with timing or fitting the sequence. So, in this way some of the staging or timing is a little bit off. Certain script choices seem like, well, a choice too. There’s just something odd about portions of the dialogue. Regardless, I do think this film is mostly a good time and something you can enjoy if you overlook the fumbles. If you can, then if you’re anything like me, there will be lots of laughter.

The cast is fun, the insta-love angle is annoying, but the film does still try to make the effort to liven things up with a little motorcycle play and some good-natured pursuits.

Stream, at publication, Year of the Comet on Prime Video (it’s set to leave soon); or digitally rent/purchase on place like Prime Video

Content: nothing much to note in this PG film. One scene implies sex (we see the couple make out in robes before they make it to the bed still in robes; the next scene is the typical “morning after” shot of her in bed). A man having hallucinations sees a nude woman dancing (she isn’t really naked). There’s some profanity (minor) and some action gunplay (again, minor). There are three or so dead bodies, some blood.
