‘RECIPES FOR LOVE AND MURDER,’ SEASON TWO IS UNIQUE AND COLORFUL SHOW

Returning to the mysterious (and delicious, too!) world of Tannie Maria, Acorn TV returns for Recipes for Love and Murder, series two in a new group of mysteries ready to present new mysteries.

Recipes for Love and Murder (2025) Acorn TV Review

Keeping her former life a secret isn’t quite as simple or easy as Maria (Maria Doyle Kennedy) would want. Part of her reason for living in this small community is a fresh start and to move on after her husband, a man who wasn’t kind, died. Now her past comes to her doorstep when a woman from that life shows up and seems to take up permanent residence in Maria’s home. Still, sorrow and death again soon finds Maria when fires break out and a pillar of the community dies.

Known as “Tannie Maria,” she’s the local columnist who helps people struggling in their romantic or life pursuits, a task she does by conjuring delicious meals. Elsewhere, her boss Hattie (Jennifer Steyn) makes political plans and local detective, Khaya (Tony Kgoroge) finds himself not only busy trying to solve a murder, but also is of interest to not one, but two intriguing women.

I wasn’t able to see episode one of season two, but reading about its plot and seeing the little “recap” portion at the start of episode two reveals that Hattie sets out to change her community by jumping into politics and of course, an accident that ends up being a murder happens. This begins another season of another series in a long line of memorable shows from Acorn TV. From My Life is Murder to Harry Wild, the company has many titles that are easy to love and enjoy.

I think, if I had to spotlight one thing, the thing I weirdly love most about this is its color. From the newspaper office to Maria’s wardrobe, I love the contrast with the darker stories. Additionally, the characters, like most of the productions we see from Acorn, are fabulous. I love that Maria is likeable and talented, but how she’s written and how Kennedy plays her also makes us question her. Most notably the “what” of her past; what happened? Everyone else is interesting too and has scars. I also think Jessie (Kylie Fisher) is a great character and spunky, plus the romance she’s half of is, ridiculously cute.

I enjoy the show and its unique blend of serious (which there is plenty of) and humor. Simple perhaps, but I also love that the opening credits have personality and actually mean something for the story. That feels like a lost art. If you like mysteries and enjoy other Acorn TV shows, Recipes for Love and Murder season two is perhaps an underrated show you might want to add to your list of shows to give a chance.

Stream, at publication, episode one and two now on Acorn TV (Prime Video Channel or AcornTV.com) and watch for weekly episode drops through April 14. Catch up on season one, too also on Acorn TV!

Note: I had a chance to view screeners of season two of Recipes for Love and Murder; all opinions are my own. Thanks so much to Acorn for the opportunity to review this season.

Content: there is some suggestive comments (like someone having 20 minutes when they visit a boyfriend or a comment about having makeup sex). Profanity also crops up now and then (including the f-word).
