CELEBRATE IRELAND WITH THESE IRISH MOVIES TO WATCH

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches it’s time again to take a closer look at some of the films and TV shows that have a setting or some connection to Ireland. Mostly because this is fun, but also because let’s be real, Irish countryside is, based on cinematography, quite gorgeous. Whether we can find additional Irish movies to watch is another story altogether, but we’re going to see what we can find irrespective and hopefully have some fun even in this research phase.

Boasting an impressive cast, this is an R-rated period drama that sounds bittersweet. It’s split time about characters in the 1940s and present day. The story follows Ethel Ann who loved and lost. The cast includes Mischa Barton, Neve Campbell and Stephen Amell (currently in Suits: LA). Plus you’ll see Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine, too.

A Hallmark mystery production, this film is quite entertaining and follows an orchestra conductor, Gethsemane Brown, who ends up taking a teaching position in Ireland, only to find she gets caught up in a murder mystery – where her partner is a ghost! THE MAGICAL LEGEND OF THE LEPRECHAUNS

This one seems very much Irish and an ideal albeit perhaps silly Irish movies to watch. It’s a fantasy story that is about “forbidden love” which inspires a war between fairies and leprechauns. The cast list is pretty impressive in this one and includes Jonathan Firth, Kevin McKidd and Zoë Wanamaker.

Stream, at publication, with Prime Video; Peacock, Plex, Roku or Tubi; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video

THE MIGHTY CELT

Described as a “coming of age” story, this one follows a young boy who adopts a greyhound and also befriends a “mysterious figure” from his mother’s past life. Gillian Anderson and Robert Carlyle (from Once Upon a Time) star in this film.

Stream, at publication, on Prime Video or Roku; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video

THE MIRACLE CLUB

I think this one starts in Ireland, about characters who haven’t left their small community. I cannot remember for sure though. It’s one I did watch a bit of the star-studded film but shut it off because it just wasn’t a “me” kind of movie (the reason for which is the bittersweet themes). It’s about a group of women hanging on to pain and trying to move on.

ONCE

I have never seen this R-rated drama about two aspiring musicians who get an unexpected chance to collaborate.

ONDINE

In a film that sounds a little bit like a kind of dark fairytale, Colin Farrell plays a fisherman who finds a woman while at his work and his daughter coming to believe she’s a selkie. This is also a film I’d estimate is quite sad.

Stream, at publication, on Peacock or Roku; or digitally purchase / rent on Prime Video

PHILOMENA

It’s been far too long since I watched this one, and it was only once, but in my research, this one popped with an Irish tag. I’m not sure if part of the film takes place in Ireland or if a character is Irish, but there is an Irish connection apparently. The story is about a woman who wishes to find the son she gave up many years ago. It’s quite bittersweet and sad, so probably not one I’d rewatch again.

THE SEVENTH STREAM

Scott Glenn stars in this as a widowed fisherman who rescues a lovely young woman who may have a unique origin. Originally this was a film with the Hallmark Hall of Fame collection which aired back in 2001!

A SHINE OF RAINBOWS

An orphan is adopted by a woman, and they build a home on an Irish “isle,” where the film seems to take a more magical approach. But when her husband cannot accept the child, a darker future awaits. Connie Nielsen and Aidan Quinn star.

WAKING NED DEVINE

This one sounds like a dark comedy about a lottery winner who “dies of shock” and the presumably quirky townspeople who clamor to claim his winnings.

WIDOW’S PEAK

‘WIDOWS PEAK’: AN UNEXPECTED PERIOD DRAMA WITH MYSTERY. Review of the 1994 drama with Joan Plowright and Mia Farrow.

I recently rewatched this one, and was reminded how entertaining the film is. It’s about a small community of widows who live in the Irish countryside. It also has an impressive cast and goes in a direction that the first time I watched it is surprising.

Stream, at publication, with Plex or Tubi; or find on Hoopla. Digitally purchase / rent on Prime Video
