‘THE CHELSEA DETECTIVE,’ SERIES THREE: NEW MYSTERIES PUT DETECTIVES TO WORK

Acorn TV has new installments in one of their original detective dramas, and as its next episode drops today, we are sharing thoughts on The Chelsea Detective series three.

The Chelsea Detective, Series Three (2025) Acorn TV Review

Gaining access to a coveted garden plot should be a relaxing and simple pursuit. But on this day, the new renters discover a body, a corpse to be precise, in their new plot. This brings DI Max (Adrian Scarborough) and his DS Layla Walsh (Vanessa Emme) to the scene of the garden. While there, they find ID and begin their investigation of this murder under the assumption of that ID. The surprise however comes when their coroner discovers that this is in fact not the man they thought.

This changes the trajectory of their investigation and even puts Max in the path of a dangerous person.

The core group of characters is back in three (far too few) new mysterious. The first episode of this third season is technically ‘Everyone Loves Chloe,’ the episode that dropped in December of 2024. Now, the final three installments of this series will drop on Mondays in April. Episode one, ‘Deadlock’ is another solid addition and gives the viewer a bit of fun too as we watch Max try (but mostly flounder) to dip his toe into dating again.

The cast, like always, is good. We don’t really get to “know” the team in this like most American shows like to dig into, but I love that. It helps keep the focus on the story (meaning the mystery) but also allows us to like the characters “as is” (although we do meet Layla’s love) rather than because we get too emotionally invested in their personal (and oftentimes messy) lives. I like Layla (who wasn’t an original character) and how she gently teases Max and I look forward to, hopefully, seeing more of this crime solving detective duo.

This second episode pits them up against a formidable foe, and perhaps a case unlike anything they’ve seen before. It also features SAG® Award-winner Alex Kingston in a guest starring role. Beyond this, episodes three and four jump into treasure and music, and a case involving climate and science. Like any of the past episodes in this series, I thoroughly am enjoying this third season. The number of episodes is limiting, yes, but when the stories are this good, well, I really don’t mind. Compelling and featuring excellent cast (including guest stars), this is easily one of the good British mysteries!

Sincere thanks to Acorn TV for the opportunity to screen this series. All opinions are my own.

Content: nothing to note outside of the usual murder scenes. There are two in episode two (both of which are the discovery of skeletal remains). Another murder scene in episode three sees a body lying on the floor of a shop. The series is TV-14. Please note: this content doesn’t reflect what is in the rest of the episodes.
