‘DEPT. Q’: MATTHEW GOODE LEADS NEW MYSTERY
Returning to a starring role in a TV show, even if only limited, Matthew Goode leads the titular department in Dept. Q, a dark story that I am sure will dig into plenty of secrets.
Dept. Q (2025) Netflix TV Review
Sarcasm is everything DCI Carl Morck (Goode) hides behind. He uses it with his colleagues which makes him a less-than-popular boss. What does make him valuable is his brilliant mind which gets results. When a case, from his past, went bad and leaves life-altering injuries and worse in its wake, Carl is assigned to Department Q, a place where he is the sole member.
A cold case unit, Carl must try to make this “PR stunt” of a department actually mean something, so despite being unliked and unpopular he brings on a small group who seem to have something to prove, all in the hopes that they actually can make a different.
TV SERIES REVIEW | ‘THE BETTER SISTER’: A DARK MYSTERY FROM PRIME VIDEO
‘DEPT. Q’: MATTHEW GOODE LEADS NEW MYSTERY. See #MatthewGoode in the latest #Netflix mystery series. #Mystery Share on XThis is one of those titles that, despite some hyped shows releasing even now (in what is considered more of an “off season”), I heard next to nothing about. It was kind of pure luck that I did discover it, and all I’ll say is, I’m glad it did cross my content research path. The show is good even if it does enjoy its darker tones.
Like always, Mathew Goode is great in the lead. I quite like that he is one actor who can play in multiples roles or genres and be memorable. Almost everyone else is unfamiliar, but in the episodes I did see (which isn’t the entire series), I like them. Kelly Macdonald also stars in this show. The series establishes a two-timeline plot in the first episode so how that will play out remains to be seen, but one thing any viewer can say is, it does draw you in.
This, in some ways, seems very Sherlock Holmes like. It has a hero who not everyone will like, which is a man who thinks he is quite superior to almost everyone. The production though it really good and though I didn’t see the entire nine-episode run (there aren’t enough hours in a day), what I did see is really good. I’m all kinds of curious to see how this connective mystery plays out.

Content: Lots of F-word profanity uses; shit is also frequently in use. There are also other sexual/rude references to people. (There is also the c-word.) The show, within the first 2-3 minutes, has multiple people shot. (We hear this happening and see the aftermath as people lay lifeless on the floor with blood everywhere; we relive this again through flashbacks and also video.) Adult topics like suicide is hinted at. There is backside nudity when a woman showers. There are rude hand gestures. The series is TVMA and deserves this rating. Note; this content only reflects what’s in episodes one – three.
