‘THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON’ IS STORY OF UNUSUAL FRIENDSHIP
A famous film from back in 2019, The Peanut Butter Falcon has high user ratings and is popular among audiences. Despite this, it wasn’t one I ever saw. But as I’m exploring some more unusual films, I finally did.
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) Film Review
Living in an assisted living home isn’t what Zak (Zack Gottsagen) wants out of life. He has down syndrome, but is more than twenty years younger than his neighbors. Despite his failed attempts to escape the home, Zak keeps trying. He wants to be among peers but most of all, he wants to learn how to fight, not unlike one of his favorite videos which he rewatches time and again.
Finally, he finds freedom and makes his escape. By happenstance, he stows away on the boat of Tyler (Shia LaBeof), a drifter who fishes for crab but finds himself in a good deal of trouble. As the two both run from something, Zak also ends up having Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), someone from the home, following his trail.

A popular film I feel like I saw on social media or other places during the height of its release and popularity, it’s easy to see why audiences enjoy this. It’s one of those uplifting stories that’s infectious. It’s a story about finding friendship. It’s also about making a stand, even if that’s something you don’t fully understand the meaning of, and creating a life to go with hat.
The film has a fabulous cast and seeing Shia in this after only seeing him in adventure films is interesting. He plays this lone drifter really well and Dakota Johnson (who I most recently saw in Netflix’s Persuasion) is good too. Same goes for Zak as well. Like we started out saying, the cast is good. I enjoy them all in their respective roles.
Bittersweet but also humorous in unexpected bursts, The Peanut Butter Falcon is inspiring and heartwarming though it doesn’t end in a way that will suit everyone.

Content: people are cruel to Zak and call him multiple names. He’s pushed around and even after being told he’s unable to swim, they carelessly shove him around near water. A tense scene shows someone nearly being hit by a boat. There’s a fire that destroys a dock. Men walk around shirtless and one person runs around nearly naked (in only his underwear). The film is PG-13.
