The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) TNT Film Review

Learning and pursuing learning is what Flynn Carson (Noah Wyle) does best. He’s an adult who still lives with his mother (Olympia Dukakis), which puts off potential girlfriends, and he has done nothing but attend school. When he’s kicked out of the latest program he’s overstayed his welcome at, his mother sets into motion a possible new career choice. This coincidence leads him to apply for a position at the library. Assuming he’s literally going to be a librarian, Flynn learns that actually he’s being hired to be a protector; someone who protects relics and magic from falling into the wrong hands.

When he sets out to find a stolen spear, Flynn immediately finds danger in a mission that challenges him.

Like almost anything from this franchise, you’ll find lots of fun and adventure inside The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. It’s a good time and has plenty of crazy adventure to boot. What some may not like is the original trio of films does interchange Flynn’s teammate. It’s not until The Librarians TV show (from 2014) that we get a bit more continuity and get to hang out with the same characters. ER is perhaps how you best know Noah Wyle, and now his newer medical drama too.

When it comes down to it, this film is just good fun. It’s from Dean Devlin who we probably know from shows like Leverage so you know what the kind of adventure quality is like. It’s all about legends and some of the “adventure” gets silly, buy overall, fun is the conclusion. The cast is good and additionally includes Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin. If you enjoy the legend stories or you like things like CBS’ short-lived Blood and Treasure or Apple TV+’s Fountain of Youth, well then, you’re certain to enjoy this title. It’s one of those titles that seems to have the sole goal to entertain – and it does this quite well.

Content: There is some adventure violence, including chases and gunplay with our heroes as as they try to accomplish their mission. There is also some innuendo, but again nothing graphic. A woman seduces a man; and there is the implication they have sex (they make out and then the scene cuts away to an “after” shot of clothes strewn everywhere). There is conversation about myths and “ancient gods” that the script uses as part of the plot. The film is TV-PG.

    1. There is! I think there are three movies with Noah Wyle. I saw one years ago and then recently watched this one which I thought was fun. :)
