The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022) Seasons One and Two Prime Video Review
Summer has always been magical and seems like a different world for young Isabel aka Belly (Lola Tung). Each summer her family and her mother’s best friend’s family spend summers together at a beautiful beach house. This summer… this summer things are different. Everyone is growing up and this year, brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) see Belly as a girl rather than their pesky “little sister” childhood playmate.
Together they all do some growing up and find the summer… and the one that follows to be one that changes them all as they navigate heartbreak over the magical summer months that spans two summertime seasons.
‘THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY’ SEASONS ONE AND TWO PRIME VIDEO REVIEW: LOOKS LIKE SUMMER! Reviewing seasons one and two of the #PrimeVideo show. #TheSummerITurnedPretty Share on XThis is the first time I’m actually watching The Summer I Turned Pretty. This is despite the fact that I did read the novel. The story evolves into a kind of curious love triangle that won’t suit those of us who don’t like that trope. The cast is good though and the show, which is led by Jenny Han as a showrunner, does “grow up” its story. Where the novel seems or perhaps “feels” a bit juvenile, the series tends to make the characters appear or “appeal” as older.

This is a good thing, but it’s also strange to watch because the characters are still the same age. It’s been too long since I read the first book, so I don’t know how well it translates to screen. I did read (which I think I’m reading for the second time) the second novel and it does a nice job matching the novel to screen. The Summer I Turned Pretty seasons one and two is like two parts of the same story in a kind of continuous plot line.
One thing that is true of this show is that it’s very summer-y and perfectly atmospheric in the season. There are stunning scenes and the ocean, naturally, provides this. The cast is relatively (aka mostly) good too. They are newcomers and yet they bring emotion to the story, which this needs because it is a bittersweet story. There are a lot of tears and sorrow and sadness. Regardless I don’t love everyone, but I also don’t love all of the characters or respect their choices, so I think this is part of what hinders rooting on some of the characters.
This show’s first two seasons is kind of “broken up” into two parts. The first season is (mostly) cheerful and sweet with good memories, so it’s “before”; the second season is kind of the “aftermath” of that debut season and the healing they seek. The show is surprisingly better than I give it credit for. There is drama, which always annoys me, but it also has heart and Lola plays Belly more mature, which is nice.

Content: lots of f-words in this 16+ show. There is also quite a lot of implied sex (conversation) and other times we “see” it getting hot and heavy. A girl removes her top and he’s “impressed” to see her naked. One character presents as “bi” (if this bothers you) and we see this through different “hook ups” the person has. There are make outs with the character between the same sex and opposite. All of this is between teens. An adult couple has sex in a car (they are clothed, but there is movement), one of these characters is bi-sexual. People use drugs and get high (teens and adults); they get drunk too. This is all in season one. In season two, much the same type of content appears. (A scene shows a girl losing her virginity; they undress and make out before the scene cuts away.)
