‘HEADS OF STATE’: ACTION COMEDY ABOUT WORLD LEADERS
One of those movies people will either love or hate, Heads of State has a unique trio as the face of its story. The story follows Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba), a leader who is in need of a bit of damage control. He isn’t exactly loved in the way he once was and he’s also mourning a loss. But what doesn’t help is he’s not getting along with a fellow leader. His participating opponent is the U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena) are having a feud that isn’t friendly, and what’s worse, it’s happing in the public eye. This threatens the once friendly bond between the UK and the U.S. Things happen, words are exchanged and then, both of them earn a target on their back when foreign adversaries decide both leaders need to go.
Unfortunately for them, the best security in the world isn’t proving all that helpful and so they learn that each other is the only person they can rely on… until they team up with MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a talented operative whose reappearance is a surprise to Sam.

This, like the last Amazon MGM release, Deep Cover, isn’t a film I saw a great deal of promotion or publication for, but if there is one thing that can be said for Heads of State, it’s this; the film does entertain. The cast is kind of an odd combination and doesn’t really seem like a group that you’d ordinarily put together, but that’s part of what makes the film funny.
Beyond this, the action of the film is, well, ridiculous. Like any movie in the genre, it presents a scenario that realistically no one is likely to survive, but again, this is what we expect from a flick like this. We want crazy action and impossible scenarios because that is what we sign up for when we watch something like this. Some of the jokes seem very pointed, and as a result, are a little annoying. I can appreciate a good joke no matter how pointed, but I think this one uses these jokes as a pointed accusation. Still, the conversations portions of the movie are decent and make the silly worth it.
If you want something a little goofy but also fun and with some mystery, then this is an ideal watch on this long weekend.

Content: Compared to most movies, this one is relatively mild for its PG13 rating. There is quite a bit of violence which is what the rating is for. Lots of things blow up and weapons like knives or guns are used. Lots of hand-to-hand combat, stab wounds, fatal wounds, someone violently had boiling water poured down their throat. There is very little profanity.
