‘DEEP COVER’: A FUNNY (BUT KIND OF UNUSUAL) MOVIE

With an unusual group of characters, but a familiar concept, Deep Cover is a new comedy film that makes its U.S. drop on Prime Video.

Deep Cover (2025) Film Review

Working as an improv teacher keeps color in the life of Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard). She has interesting students and people with big plans, and hopes to do cool things. But while this introduces her to others wanting to follow their dreams, she begins to wonder if she has given up on hers. Then something quite unexpected happens. She meets Billings (Sean Bean), an undercover cop who offers her something quite unusual. The job? To go undercover in a seedy London gang.

Together, Kat along with her students Hugh (Nick Mohammed) and Marlon (Orlando Bloom) take on these roles (which are one of a kind!) and work undercover while impersonating, well, hardened criminals!

I’m not entirely sure what I expected from Deep Cover, but one thing I didn’t anticipate is that it’s (much to my surprise) a script that we can relate to. Sure, not the whole undercover bit, but the feeling of finding a place and a role, well, that is quite universal. Another thing is, that despite its genre (I know), is how much I would laugh through this. The film is, well, quite funny. It has silliness, but it’s also the good kind and I think, like Bryce Dallas Howard’s last lead role, the film purposefully and delightfully leans into that silly. This is because that is largely what the movie needs to prove successful and entertaining, too. It’s also one of those movies that can get away with this.

The cast is really good. I’ve not seen the leading lady in a lot of titles, but what she’s been in have all been good and she’s no different here. She has a kind of easy-to-like personality that makes her heroines impossible to ignore, and even, sassy. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Orlando Bloom in anything, probably last I saw of him was the ‘Pirates’ films. He’s fun in this too but somehow different. The rest of the cast is good and I like their scene stealing moments together.

Fun and entertaining, Deep Cover is a ton of fun. It won’t suit everyone because it IS an adult comedy, but if you’re not bothered by this then this is easily the best kind of a weekend watch.

Content: there are lots (and consistent throughout) of f-word uses and other lesser profanity like shit. Someone is shot in the head (we see them dead on the ground) and another person is run over by a vehicle. Two people heavily make out and get on a bed before they are interrupted. There are one or two sexual jokes. The film has an R-rating, which is likely mostly for that profanity since without it, this could pass for PG-13.
