‘NO STONE UNTURNED’ IS UNIQUE HISTORICAL REGENCY NOVEL

STORY: Wanting to uncover the past has long been a hobby of Bridget Littleton’s. She loves artifacts and discovering their history, so when a local uncovers a rare mosaic, Bridget is determined to discover its origins. This puts her in the path of (literally) and at odds with Captain Rafe Hawthorn, a war veteran who is now the new lord of Hawthorn Abbey, a title he now has from his uncle.

Rafe wants to restore the abbey and that means change is required, which isn’t exactly what Bridget has in mind. She’s more about protecting her find even if Rafe’s plans do have merit. Two people with two very different goals, these two soon learn that finding a way forward may be to work together.

NO STONE UNTURNED book review

REVIEW: A book about clashing lead characters isn’t new, but it usually presents a fun story. Inside these pages, the same holds true. Bridget is a compelling and interesting heroine who has more than her work at stake. Rafe is a battle weary hero who isn’t exactly thrilled with his new role in life, and so he wants to tun this into something positive. Both have bright prospects and good intentions even with their respective shadows coloring their lives.

When it comes down to it, while I respect this story (which isn’t a type of story I’ve read before), I’m just not a historical fiction fan. There is one author whose books I’ve enjoyed several by, but as the adult reader I am now, I just cannot warm to them. Odd since I love British period drama and I think some of the historical books that I did read are well written, which is true of No Stone Unturned. It’s a book that seems to easily put us into the regency era, which is a pro bullet point. Why I cannot get into them, I don’t know.

I’m glad I read this one though as it has shades of stories like Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice and is a book that certainly hides more than what its synopsis reveals. If you like the era or, like me, just want to read a new author every now and then, well No Stone Unturned is perhaps the read you’ve been waiting for.
