‘BUTTERFLY,’ SEASON ONE PRIME VIDEO REVIEW: AN INTERESTING SPY GAME
Joining the ranks of their growing TV show library, Prime Video adds Butterfly to their content. A spy thriller, the season one (binge release) story unfolds in the typical tense fashion of its genre.

After a life of danger and little peace, David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim) should be living a less stressful life. But his past draws him back to the job. A former intelligence operative and agency founder, he knows secrets and how to stay hidden. All skills he may have been able to leave behind. Now, decisions and missions from the past come back to haunt him. This sends him running a mission again, and this time, it’s chasing a skillful agent, on his own.
Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) is good at her job and when she gets orders from the spy organization who employs her, she doesn’t question it. Then secrets come out and eventually she begins to question everything all while hunting the asset who nearly ruined her last assassination. Their paths end up causing effects the powers that be may not anticipate.

It’s familiar to any of us who binge watched and enjoyed titles like Nikita or Burn Notice. Still, as someone who does love a good spy thriller, I am intrigued by this six-episode season. It immediately sets up to its story and throws us into the mystery, even revealing big things right away in the first episode. Additionally, this marks the return of Daniel Dae Kim to TV show lead in this after being a lead star in the CBS reboot of Hawaii Five-O. He’s good in this role and the rest of the cast, while mostly unfamiliar to me, is also good. Which also has Piper Perabo too. She of course already headlined a spy dramedy in USA Network’s Covert Affairs, and in this, she is ruthless.
The show is good (based off the start) and definitely deserves the tag of being ‘interesting.’ It has really good intrigue, which keeps us invested; something any good mystery or thriller title should strive to do. There is more than one character (Rebecca for example is pure anger and snark) that seems to be on the edge of betrayal, making us wonder, are they an ally or nemesis? Sometimes this is frustrating because I like to have characters I know are worth rooting for, but in this genre, it’s a necessity.
Of late, Prime Video (or Amazon MGM Studios) has been winning with their compelling TV shows. Fresh off their release of Ballard and the still ongoing Countdown, they release Butterfly season one, a show that I am sure will end with a tease of more seasons yet to come. Question is, what danger may await David in future seasons?

Content: this one has quite a bit of violence and more than one tense situation. There is hand to hand combat in several scenes (all kinds of weapons). People die violently. There is profanity including shit and the f-word. We see a couple having sex (she has on a bra and we see her straddle him; there is some movement and expression before the scene cuts to after). The show is 16+. Note; I did not binge watch all episodes so this reflects only three episodes.
