‘BOSTON BLUE,’ SEASON ONE: A BELOVED CBS CHARACTER IS BACK!
In a unique (sort of) move to keep a beloved character on our screens, CBS produces a spin-off from one of their fan favorites (for over ten years) dramas. Boston Blue is a detective drama with new (and one favorite) characters that promises to honor its inspiration.
Boston Blue (2025) TV Show Review
If there is one thing no one sees the true-blue Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) doing, it would be leaving New York behind. Yet this is what he does. In the aftermath of a near death experience in his family, Danny makes a choice. He travels to Boston where he ends up working the case that injured his son. But nothing about this change goes exactly smoothly. Danny ends up leaving a not-so-great first impression on Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the detective who he ends up partnering with.
Lena comes from Boston PD royalty, same as Danny and yet, their style is different. Naturally this causes a clash or two between them. Still as Danny adjusts to his more permanent change of zip code, he finds a place among this prominent Silver family, who perhaps aren’t so very different from the Reagans. He also has to build a relationship with his youngest son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), a rookie cop starting his own career in Boston.
TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘NCIS: SYDNEY, SEASON THREE: FIRST THOUGHTS ON THIS TEAM’S RETURN
‘BOSTON BLUE,’ SEASON ONE: A BELOVED CBS CHARACTER IS BACK! First impression on #BostonBlue drama. #BlueBloods #DonnieWahlberg #TVShow Share on XThis show has been described as an “expansion” of the world the highly rated Blue Bloods created, and I think it’s a fair term to use. This show removes several characters, but in doing this, there is lots of room for the growth of Sean Reagan and to meet these new Boston characters, too. We also catch up with Bridget Moynahan’s Erin and see another Easter egg from Blue Bloods. This first episode is also likely an indication that more Reagan’s are sure to pop up here and there.
While definitely different from its origin show, Boston Blue is good. From what I see, the behind the scene team is different. I think it’s forming its own voice while still being mindful (as it should) of bringing its core fans into this fold. In addition to the topline cast, we also have Maggie Lawson, Gloria Rueben and Ernie Hudson. Additionally another connection between the Reagan and Silver families is that it shares rookies in Sean (though Amonsen is a recast) and Jonah, and this iteration honors one of the hallmarks of the original CBS drama.
It’s early days, and things could change, but judging by this pilot episode, I did enjoy this, and I hope this first episode is a positive inkling of what’s to come.
Stream, at publication, Boston Blue season one next-day on Paramount+

Content: this show does rate TV-14 (same as Blue Bloods) but it has pretty much the same content as that drama. There is violence and the detectives solve mysterious cases which deal with some troubling people or things.

I haven’t seen Boston Blue. Rissi, Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
It was intriguing and while different from Blue Bloods, I think it has great potential. :)
This sounds like a great show! My best friend is a huge fan of Blue Bloods. I’ll have to check the show out! Thanks for the recommendation, Rissi!
I really did love Blue Bloods. So seeing this continuation (even with the differences) of the world is a fun thing. Hoping the pilot is an indicator of a great show.
