THE STORY: where did season twelve leave off?
This is one story that has had many ups and downs, but through it all, its primary heroine has been Elizabeth Thatcher. At the end of season twelve, Elizabeth made the decision to leave Hope Valley, the place she deeply loves and has called home for over ten years, in order to ensure her son received the specialized medical care he needs.
She had to leave in a rush because of urgency and was unable to say goodbye to her love Mountie Nathan Grant. She left word behind about where she was going little expecting that Natha and his ward would instead follow behind and with no hesitation follow and go wherever Elizabeth went.
So the romantic overture of Nathan’s choice is where we left the characters. Speaking of those characters, who will be back?
THE CHARACTERS: who is returning?
Most, if not all the beloved names and faces will return. The characters and actors who play them include:
- Erin Krakow as Elizabeth Thornton
- Kevin McGarry as Nathan Grant
- Jack Wagner as Billy Avery
- Chris McNally as Lucas Bouchard
- Pascale Hutton as Rosemary Coulter
- Kavan Smith as Lee Coulter
- Ava Grace Cooper as Opal
- Jaeda Lilly Miller as Allie Grant
Additionally, returning in a guest starring role for season thirteen is Brooke Shields playing Charlotte Thornton. The actress first originated this role in the third season of When Calls the Heart, and according to the press release, she’ll play this role for three episodes in this latest season.
THE PHOTOS

Hallmark released a few preview photos and they leave us with some observations and questions. Allie is growing into quite the young lady; what might Lucas and Nathan be discussing?; and what has this newly formed family so surprised?

Another thing that isn’t new is a trailer for this upcoming thirteenth year. Still, take another look if you’d like.
WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SEASON?
Already announced is a fourteenth season that will, presumably shoot in 2026 and be able to then debut in 2027 (and yes writing 2027 made me cringe!). The show will likely bring back its primary cast which should include Erin Krakow playing Elizabeth; Kevin McGarry playing Nathan; Kavan Smith and Pascale Hutton and Lee and Rosemary; plus, a host of other familiar faces.
Additionally announced with this season fourteen renewals is Lori Loughlin rejoining the fourteenth season as the character Abigail Stanton, a character she played across multiple seasons in the earlier years.
Also coming in March of 2026, exclusive to Hallmark+ will be a spin off series that is being marketed as a prequel with a story that looks at how Hope Valley formerly Coal Valley came to be. The show is titled Hope Valley: 1874 and will star Bethany Joy Lenz.
WHEN WILL SEASON THIRTEEN AIR?
The thirteenth season of When Calls the Heart will debut on January 4th on Hallmark Channel and will air on consecutive Sunday nights. It will then be available to stream next-day on Hallmark+
