‘PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION’ IS ONE BESTSELLER I LIKE (BOOK REVIEW)
STORY: Forged by their unexpected meeting at college where they learn they are from neighboring towns, Alex and Poppy have a friendship like no other. They also have a tradition that involves taking summer vacations together. For many summers, this sustains their respective need to be together. These trips originate in hole-in-the-wall locales that then graduate to high end experiences thanks to Poppy’s travel writer career. people we meet on vacation book review
Then something happens, and for two years the pair don’t speak.
Feeling nostalgic and regretful, Poppy reaches out to Alex. Lost, unhappy and uninspired, she proposes a trip and to her surprise, he agrees. This begins their present summer, and a trip that asks uncomfortable questions.
REVIEW: A book I should have made time to read long ago, People We Meet on Vacation is one I finally started to read a little over a week ago, set it aside and then picked it up as a “panic” read in hopes of speeding through the pages so as to beat the adaptation drop to Netflix. If you know me, you know that I don’t do “fast reading,” and this keeps true of this novel too. Still, I did (somehow) manage to read it and here is what I thought.

‘PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION’ IS ONE BESTSELLER I LIKE (BOOK REVIEW). #PeopleWeMeetonVacation #EmilyHenry Share on XReading through both the physical novel (which is the preference) over 100 pages in, I then read through Audible (which will then be promptly cancelled). A combination I was sure wouldn’t go well, but turns out didn’t go badly. The book is good fun. It shifts from past summers (changing from years like ten, nine and so on summers ago) to present and while we spend most of our time (based on chapters in the same timeline) in their present, the past gives us glimpses into what forms these two now. It also also makes us curious as to why this pair hasn’t talked for so long! Back to the point though, which is that the book is entertaining. It’s a fun story and I like the line the relationship takes.
The second Emily Henry novel I’ve read, this is easily my favorite of the two. This said, I do still have issues with this one. Sadly, I don’t think Henry is an author who will work for me. It moves slow because its building to the conflict. Reading snippets of other reviews, what surprises me is that readers don’t like the ending. I think its quite satisfying; the experiences of Poppy and Alex are interesting. All in all, I did like People We Meet on Vacation. Would I have liked to take in the story at my usual pace? Sure, but the fault for not being able to is my own, and in spite of this, the book is interesting.

People We Meet on Vacation Book Review Content: lots of mentions about sex and having sex is part of the text. People tease each other about not having or having sex; or buying a book about sex. There is narration about not going all the way, but doing other things and making out heavily. We learn a couple has sex, and there is some description of this (this comes later in the novel, over halfway through). They discuss the sex (how good it was, and there are some descriptions during sex too). Someone mentions having a vasectomy (and it’s kind of weird). There are uses of the F-word, but I didn’t clock them in excess. The book text would be a PG-13 film.

I’ve been hesitant to read another book by this author after not loving Beach Read. I’m sure I’ll try another one eventually, but it’s not a priority for me at the moment. Great review!
I know what you mean, Lindsi! I didn’t LOVE Beach Read either. I don’t think this one is a new favorite either, but I did like it better. :) But like you, I tend to stay away from authors if I don’t love what I’ve read by them. I feel like there are too many other books to discover. :)
Exactly! I’d rather try something new or read an author I already love.
Rissi, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Emily Henry is a new-to-me author.
So many readers love her books! :)
