FIVE OF THE BEST ROMANCE MOMENTS BETWEEN POPPY AND ALEX
Without looking at the date, I feel like it’s been a while since I added to the OTP favorite archives. Today, as it is Valentine’s Day, I’m remedying this by looking back on five of the best romantic moments between Poppy and Alex, the protagonists from the recent Netflix romance adaptation People We Meet on Vacation. Inspired by the novel from Emily Henry, Netflix adapts the novel in a way that captures the spirit of Henry’s novel even with some differences.

The romance of Alex and Poppy from #PeopleWeMeetonVacation. #EmilyHenry Share on XThe story falls into the best friends to lover’s trope as we meet Alex and Poppy, two friends who for ten or so years have gone on a yearly vacation together even as their lives keep them mostly apart the rest of the year. The story has no shortage of romance moments between these two even if some of them are more about the promise of what might be. Let’s take a closer look at some of these charming scenes.
ROMANTIC MOMENTS BETWEEN POPPY and ALEX

THE MEET CUTE
In a flashback scene, we see the first meeting between these two college students. It’s actually a sweet scene and does a brilliant job of immediately showing off who these characters are. We see that Alex is nervous and serious (and careful) while Poppy is the frazzled free-spirit.
As we watch her dash up to Alex’s car (in order to catch a ride back to their hometown) babbling in an adorably cute way, it’s really Alex’s reaction we are most invested in. It’s one of annoyance, yes, but also curious wonder that reveals he is immediately intrigued by this colorful woman.
THE FAUX MARRIAGE DANCE
Another flashback moment shows us that during one of the trips Alex (the guy who likes stability and despises vacations) takes with Poppy (the vibrant and travel obsessed girl), the pair pretend to be newlyweds. This they do while experiencing some of the happening spots of the city. While conversing with an actual newlywed couple, the pair get to spinning a tall tale about their non-existent first dance which they then reenact (or rather make up!) and of course, this brings them close.
THE YELLOW DRESS KISS
In what amounts to a homage to Andie Anderson from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (according to interviews with star Emily Bader), Poppy wears a neon green dress in the stereotypical “staircase” moment. Of course, the dress and first look takes Alex’s breath away, and it, along with other things, inspires the pair to finally get honest. An epic kiss in the rain follows.
THE RACE
Eventually Poppy comes to realize that for all her travel and adventure and displaced sense of wanderlust, it’s actually a person who makes her happiest. Of course, this person is Alex and it’s him she decides she wants. This decision sends her on a literal chase (which also is reflective of her personality and emotional choices to chase the wrong things) after Alex when she arrives at his house only to realize he’s on a run, and she has to chase after him.
Of course, this leads to an entirely epic declaration and kiss.
BUILDING a LIFE in the romance of Poppy and Alex
The film also leaves Poppy and Alex building a life, and in a nod to the main storyline, we also see them on a plane, presumably on a trip where Poppy gently leans her head on Alex’s shoulder and again, knowing Alex has been in love with her for years (one may even argue from that first meet-cute), it’s his expression we clock. It’s one full of trust and gentle – finally, unchecked joy.
