‘ETERNITY’ IS A ROMANCE WITH HEART DESPITE BITTERSWEET STORY

A romance dramedy that debuted last year, Eternity finally drops to streaming and it’s bittersweet but also inspires a few smiles.

Eternity (2025) Film Review

Life has been good for Joan. She loved, lost and loved again, and now she loses again when her husband of 60+ years passes away. Shortly after she follows because of a terminal illness. Now her life ends, and Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) enters the afterlife. In this place, she has one week to decide her fate. Eternity could go one of two ways. She can spend it with the man (Miles Teller) with whom she built a life, fights bitterly with, and shares a collection of good and bad times. Or she could spend this infinite time with her first love (Callum Turner), a man who died young, and has been waiting for her.

The cast is primarily the reason I read about this film when it first made headlines, and I think it honestly is really the only reason I watched this. Through the years, I’ve seen a few afterlife movies, but they have been ones that left me with mixed reactions. Similar is my reaction to Eternity. While the cast is strong and the movie has some heartwarming and poignant moments, honestly, I also find it a little, well… depressing.

FILM REVIEW | ‘THE GORGE’: A FILM ON THE EDGE OF SOMETHING

What I did love about this production is seeing Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller. I’ve so enjoyed the other roles I’ve seen them in, and of course, Teller was also in last year’s Apple TV drop The Gorge. Both of them (they also serve as EPs) are quite good in their respective roles and I like the sweet romantic moments between them. The color palette of this film is quite gorgeous as is the costume design, and wonderfully vintage expression.

This film also presents us with the love triangle trope, albeit with a bit of a twist. This likely also contributes to the reason why going into this, I’m not a completely sold fan. However, while there is one clear cut winner in my mind, I did find this choice more interesting than them most. So, for these reasons alone, I do have to give this script props. The film also has surprisingly poignant moments and sense of life despite the subject.

While perhaps not a film I’ll add to my frequent rewatch list (and one I don’t agree with every conclusion on), I did very much enjoy Eternity. It has enough charm to keep us visually curious, and the characters are compelling enough to make us keep watching. Whether the end will suit all viewers well, that’s another story entirely.

Stream, at publication, Eternity exclusively with Apple TV

Content: This film is PG-13 and has the standard adult fare that comes with this rating. There are comments about sex and different relationships people have had or experiences the characters have had. We see a couple having sex twice (once beneath sheets and the moment is in a memory passing montage), and the other is brief, too.
