‘FIFTH AVENUE GIRL’: THIS ONE IS A FUN 1930s COMEDY
A comedy with the ‘screwball’ tag applied, Fifth Avenue Girl is indeed one sure to keep you invested by its loveable brand of crazy.

His birthday is anything but a good day for Timothy Borden (Walter Connolly). He’s a successful businessman who lives at the right address and has a perfect family in his wife Martha (Verree Teasdale) and two adult children. But when arriving home that day from the office, he is met with silence. Everyone is out socializing, leaving Timothy, who just wants to enjoy dinner with someone, quite alone.
Inspired by his butler, he takes a walk in the park where he meets Mary Grey (Ginger Rogers). A woman who works hard for a living, she impulsively agrees to have dinner with Timothy which soon puts her into the every day lives of the Borden family in the strangest job she’s ever had.

The film is the typical stylings of this era but most of all, it makes us giggle throughout and it’s just so much fun. While this title also has the romantic comedy tag, it’s first and foremost a comedy, period. However, if you do want to lean more into the rom-com angles, what I love best about this one is how the rom-com part comes around is unconventional. So, there is a sense of fun in that, and I love it all.
I also just love these characters. Mary is genuinely a good person while Timothy is hard not to like. We even have a little upstairs-downstairs romance going on that eventually involves a kind of (hilarious) showdown in the kitchen with a knife. Like I said, it’s all very funny, and this is certainly something I would rewatch.
If you like films featuring Ginger Rogers or you simply want a good comedy, no matter when it was produced, well Fifth Avenue Girl is definitely something worth considering!
