‘THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT’: A GOOD TIME SPY COMEDY MOVIE

One of the delightful comedies (in its genre), The Glass Bottom Boat is a grand time and not something to miss.

The Glass Bottom Boat (1966) Film Review

Keeping busy is an art form that Jennifer Nelson (Doris Day) masters. She just started a new job at an aerospace lab, then she runs to night school and on some weekends, she helps her dad with his business by playing a mermaid. All of this she does while keeping happy a menagerie of animals. However, after she is hooked (literally!) by a fisherman, her life forever changes.

After an awkward encounter at work, she meets the boss Mr. Bruce Templeton (Rod Taylor) and learns that he is the man she told off at her weekend job. Fortunately for her, Bruce is quite charmed by Jennifer, and before long, the pair share a kiss under the stars. However, things get messy when he is then convinced that she is actually a spy!

FILM REVIEW | ‘HOUSEBOAT’ IS ONE OF THE HILARIOUS 1950s COMEDIES

I’ve seen this one pop quite a lot while browsing movies on streaming platforms. Why I skipped over it for so long is a mystery, especially since I did quite enjoy other films with Doris Day. This film is another title that you can add to the list of fun movies that makes us giggle! It’s one that does bring the laughs, mostly at the expense of Doris Day who goes all in (or seems to!) with lots of physical comedy. For this film, I think this is a strength and it works, but if you don’t like that type of comedy, well, this may be a skip title.

Funny and fun, The Glass Bottom Boat is one I’m glad to have finally seen. It does maybe run slightly overlong, but despite this, the movie still has a nice pace. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would watch it again. If judging solely by the films I’ve seen with Doris Day leading, this probably isn’t my top favorite, but it is a good time, and I loved it so much. There is comedy, and romance, wit and laughter, and it’s all a grand bit of entertainment.
