‘KAREN PIRIE,’ SERIES TWO: SHE INVESTIGATES A NEW COLD CASE

Revisiting another cold case (as is this drama’s motus operandi), Karen Pierie series two, is back at it with more impressive detective work.

Karen Pirie, Series Two (2025) BritBox Review

Since her unexpected promotion, Inspector Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle) has made quite a name for herself. In her first case with the historic cases unit, she not only solves the nearly twenty-year-old case, but she also arrests the person responsible, a high-ranking department head. This earns her some respect, but it also puts her in a glaring spotlight she isn’t comfortable with. She’s good at doing the job, not talking about it. Even with this new scrutiny, there are still more cases for Karen to investigate.

She directs her time and attention back on her next case. This time she looks at one from the 80s.

This case looks back on the disappearance of a young mother who, according to a witness, was held at gunpoint and forced into her car by a kidnapper.  In the backseat is her baby which causes the woman to be more than a little bit protective when he tries to threaten her child…

Like its first season three-episode (each ninety minutes) series, this series two of Karen Pirie sets up to also be intriguing and good. Given this is an international show, the characters and their respective backstories don’t tend to be as complicated or as “messy” as most shows in the U.S. This second season does up the drama and “messy” a little, while also making Karen a little bit more of a rebel than she was in series one. The rest of the cast, including returning stars Chris Jenks, Zach Wyatt, and its creator (plus writer and EP), Emer Kenny, remain memorable. We also meet a new face or two in addition to the new cast playing people from the case.

The drama does move a little slow, and if it follows its first series, it will be comprised of three parts that run 90 minutes. Everything is so well written and very well produced, working through any minor issues from series one, and I admire that the high standard continues in this next season. The “part one” episode of this series ends at just the right time, concluding on two “big” reveals and making us want more, but knowing we have to wait makes the intrigue greater.
