A Winter Princess: Romance Sparkles Under the Night Sky

When you find new Hallmark films on your DVR (that you forgot about) on a Friday night, the day always looks better. A Winter Princess is part of Hallmark’s Winterfest line-up, and it’s another sweetheart of a romance.

A Winter Princess (2019) Hallmark Review

At a struggling seasonal ski resort, Carly (Natalie Hall) works as an event coordinator. It’s been a yearlong job she’s loved every moment of, but her year “off” from reality is about to end. You see, Carly is really a princess from a tiny European country “no one has heard of.” Things start to unravel when plans for the Snowball Gala she’s in charge of go array. Then, unexpectedly, her brother and an old friend show up!

In the midst of it all, Carly is paired with the resort owner’s brother, Jesse (Chris McNally) in the hopes their teamwork will save the gala.

Like so many of their “royal romances,” this is another cute story. It switches things up by casting the female lead as the royal instead of the male. Another thing this script does really well is getting the “big secret” in the open before that predictable 15-minutes-until-the-end break up drama. Not only does it lower the predicable factor, it also encourages a more genuine relationship.

Natalie Hall and Chris McNally are a nice pair whose characters, of course, share plenty of aww cute moments. Carly’s personality and energy is infectious, and Jesse’s cautious more practical attitude is a nice counter-balance to all that sparkle.

Themes of family and duty play throughout the script. This is true for both characters, and through their respective journeys, they learn how to be themselves and find “home.” The setting of the story is really pretty, and adds to the romantic notions. I love all the snowfall, and that so many scenes take place in all of that pristine nature. Of course, the final scene is also a stunner, though it takes place indoors.

Those of us who enjoy a good Hallmark cannot go wrong with A Winter Princess. Whether it becomes a favorite or not, you’ll discover it follows the same old-fashioned storytelling of its network.
